VED or if you prefer, Car Tax

We do not even have TV or Radio Reception or Broadband in much of Scotland so i know well enough.

In parts of the West Coast you watch TV from Northern Ireland because you can not get Scottish or UK Channels, Still with Digital.

But this Con / Dem government are hot on Super Fast Broadband, so lets see what technology we get.

Its funny, there is communication with Space,

& we can Track Whales, Salmon, Birds in Flights with a sender fitted traveling around the worlds oceans,

but Phone Communications in the UK is Sharn.

Not many hills or nimbys in space or at sea though.

Electric  & Gas meter readers vehicles visit and travel every road or domestic property on the National Grid annually,

& there are several different companies, and there travel in vehicles.

If Cameras do not send back live feeds, like the Meter Readers Hand Held Devices, they can send back the Info when ever, back at the Depot.

The operator / Driver of the Vehicle is not required to be part of the Operation really.

So we will see what systems are used, but doing away with the Paper Circle is not the End of things, its the excuse with the start of things.

Pick up my Fabia vRS tomorrow and ive paid for one year road fund with the dealer. Should be one of the last tax discs issued.

Enjoy your new car.

It will certainly be one of the last thousands issued in the new Registration month.

Lots of New cars leave the Dealership currently without a disc or the need to display it, the DVLA will send it if not at the Dealers.

Sadly or maybe not if Scotland votes for independence then the Con/Dem government won't be supplying anything.

They supply very little of anything now,

Transport Scotland does the Spending from the Scottish Budget and from Scotlands own Borrowing for major infrastructure like the new Forth Crossing.

Then like Wales & NI, Scotland gets quite a lot from European Funding Grants for some lovely 'short stretches' of overpriced Road

& fancy roadside Walls in economically deprived areas.

I agree. The problem with relying on any sort of paper disc in the window nowadays is that with the proliferation of colour laser printers, scanners, photoshop etc the dishonest simply run a forgery off on their PC in five minutes.

Don't wardens carry hand-held scanners that tell them the reg plate that the barcode on the disc *should* relate to?

I believe they do, but what percentage of total cars on UK roads will come into contact with a traffic warden on a regular basis? If like me you live in a rural area and almost never park on public roads then your car will probably never be examined by a traffic warden from one year to the next. I bet I drive past a few ANPR cameras though.

Our local Jet Petrol station has ANPR cameras fitted. I think its for Bilking offences but I guess will be linked to database for other offences. Its been there over a year now.

Lots of garages have them, and you will note that there is a delay in the pumps starting to operate, as they won't until the camera has started filming. It is to stop "drive off's"

I think that we pay more than enough for fuel already and it would be just another excuse for overly inflationary rises by government and oil companies, yet another layer of administration for inefficiencies and the motorist would lose out if the excise duties were put on fuel.  I happened to like the old tax disc.  Now, how are bobbies/wardens etc going to know if a car has valid tax at a glance?  They're not.  I think it may well increase the number of illegal drivers, not decrease, but time will tell.

The number of ANPR cameras is rapidly increasing.   ANPR is not just limited to temporary roadside checks & Police ANPR equipped cars. Just go into a BP garage or Tesco and you will be spotted, a lot of these stores have them already.

The Paper Part of the UK Driving licence is being fazed out from January 2015.

Many have still only got the Original Paper licence having never required to get a Photo Card one.

& they have not got around yet to fazing these out.

They have been around for years in supermarkets and garages round here.

That's all as maybe, but the fact is ANPR is nowhere near widespread enough to catch a majority of motorists out.  Then there's the increasing "pool car" issues, especially in urban areas where gangs buy a car for cash, disclose false details at the point of purchase and run it un taxed and un-insured between a group of them.  No tax discs is just going to make spotting them harder. I can't help but think that phasing out discs and the paper part of the licence is just going to make things easier for tax dodgers and criminals.  We don't have ANPR at our  local garages and the police cannot be everywhere at once.  Neither do I relish living in a country swamped by bleeding CCTV peering into every aspect of life.

They may have numberplate recognition cameras, but aren't they just linked to the pump authorisation system to record the number plates of cars in case of a drive off.

They aren't going to be linked into the police databases to flag uninsured/stolen/wanted cars.

Er, excuse me but what's a policeman let alone roadside checks...?

I can see major issues in buying a secondhand car with current VED from a private seller.

At the moment if you buy a car that has MOT and Tax you can just call your insurance company and change vehicle details and drive away.

The seller then notify DVLA and job done.

In future you will have to register to tax the vehicle online by using the Doc Ref number on the V5c or new keeper slip and the system has details of the MOT.

At the moment it can take days for the insurance to show up on the database so will the DVLA issues VED without insurance being on the database.

You can of course tax at the post office but you will need your insurance certificate so this would mean insuring the car before you buy it.

Gone will be the days of buying a car on the spur of the moment.

Just got my last tax disc through, and I have to cut it out myself!

That's because they have run out of perforated blanks so are just printing them off.

I'v always cut mine out anyway, much neater. :)

Maybe our resident Policemen can enlighten us if ANPR is active in BP garages and Tesco stores.  If it is not the case at the moment I bet it will be in the near future.

ANPR are not CCTV cameras, they just read number plates.   I also don't like the idea of zillions of cameras watching our every move.

There's a fair few already up and out there!

The system most garages use is called Shark IIRC.

It isn't linked to the police ANPR network.
