OIL LEVEL FABIA vRS

Featured Replies

Today I looked at the oil level of the car against a tour and the level was at the minimum of the rod, I'm back to looking at spending an hour at rest and was 80 percent of the rod, is everything okay?

they all do this... its a pain to get an acurate reading.... if its up there at some point dont worry lol...

I don't bother checking if it's warm/hot/up to temperature. Its going to be wrong. Check in the morning after leaving it overnight when the oil is actually in the sump not circulated around the engine.

Checking when its warm means your likely to over fill and think you have a problem, burn off the excess, get paranoid and fill it up even more. I was like that until I realised the official advise is nonsense and now I hardly use any.

Just to add my 2p,

I agree with Gumby, the official advise is indeed nonsense!

What I would do is check the level at 10 minutes after shut down, then at 20 minutes then at 30 minutes just to see how the level changes as the oil drains back to the sump. When the oil is hot its flows better, so in theory it shouldn't take too long to trickle back to the sump.

Use the dipstick dots to get a rough idea of the level. (I use 'x' amount of dots from the top of the hatched area as my official form of measurement :-P)

Then like Gumby said, check again in the morning when the engine is cold and been left overnight to compare.

This way you can get a greater understanding of the actual level of oil in your car to prevent overfills. I'm not saying do this every time, but if you find that the overnight level is the same as a dip taken 30 minutes after shut down, you can take some confidence that in the future you can just do a cold dip in the morning and top up if needed.

I understand that the best time for the actual oil content level is to look in the morning
