Handbrake warning light whilst driving

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I recently had the brake fluid serviced at a main dealer. Every now and then since, after pulling away, the handbrake warning light illuminates with the warning bongs.

Checking the internet led me to check the brake fluid level but it is certainly not low...in fact it is up to the brim pretty much.

Could it being over full induce this fault?

What else could have caused it?

Bummer as the warranty expired at the beginning of the month although I intend to consult them about the standard of the brake fluid change.

Kind regards,

Ed

That is what to do.

Because the Warranty might expire on the car, but It is the Guarantee on their work you are questioning.

Do you mean you had a Brake Fluid Change, or that they topped it up at a Service?

It was a brake fluid change.

sounds like low brake fluid levels, pop the bonnet and have a look

As I mentioned in the OP the brake fluid is brimmed. I am assuming that an over full brake reservoir, although not desirable, is not likely to cause this issue. Where else to look? Often if I slightly cycle the handbrake, the warning ceases. The car has done 56,000m and skoda tell me the front pads are only half worn so I doubt the handbrake is worn...

You are going to have to take the rear drums off and check the shoes.

It should have had an Inspection / major service at 20,000 and 40,000 miles, Drums cleaned out & shoes inspected.

and if they did a Brake Fluid change, it should have been done if they did not know if done before.

and the hand brake possibly adjusted.

So ask the person that did the fluid change what was done.

I had a flashing ABS and (!) on mine. I was told it was an ABS wiring issue, also my brake pad replacement light is continually on due to this issue.

If its just been in the garage, get them to have it back and give it a look over.

I had to have my rear shoes done just now - at 88K. Lasted quite well considering

Quick update....

The brake fluid was at the correct level but I pulled out the small bit of plastic under the handbrake lever. Under the handbrake is a mass of wiring and by jiggling that about and out of the way of the handbrake the problem appears to have gone.
