Adjustable Steering Settings - Sport Mode!

Featured Replies

After a recent sevice update on the power steering (Info in the pinned "updates" thread) the steering in my car had a completely different feel when I picked it up from the dealers. Turns out my car had been set to Sport mode before I bought it and had been returned to Standard during the update. Eventually got it reset to Sport via SUK after mucho complaining/stark refusal to accept etc. :wait:  :punch:

Anyone heard of this before?

How many options are there?

Can this be done via VCDS?

Why are we here?

Chocolate cake or Victoria sponge?

And the like...........any info welcomed

I was looking for this in VCDS but we could not access steering adaptations.

Interested in this as would like to set mine to sport or weightier steering.

For the record my musings on the differences in the settings:

Standard (compared to Sport)

Heavy, solid, planted, more prone to following camber in the road (feels like pulling to the left), needs less correction but any correction or input to the wheel is tougher, physically more demanding. Ironically I found this more akin to a sport setting (like an old TVR I once drove) as you could really push the car through the bends as it felt so solid. Ultimately though I found it tiring, dull, less interesting and made the whole car feel a bit heavy and leaden. Having said that I can imagine this suiting those who like to press on.

Sport (compared to Standard)

Light, fleet of foot, much improved feel of the road. Takes a while to get used to as wheel needs more input (turning of the wheel) to effect change of direction but these inputs are easy and gentle. Less brutal and more gentlemanly. Ideal for those with joint pain or tendonitis. You tend to understeer for the first dozen bends or so till you recalibrate your arms. The only hint of sportiness is the improved feel of the rubber which is damped out in the standard mode. I find it encourages a more fluid, calm driving style which I think suits the Superb (or me more likely).

The difference is similar to the old 130 TDI passat Sport vs SE for those who remember.

I suspect the Goodyear Eagles on the front of my car were increasing the solid, planted feel of the standard setting.

Sparkly, I reckon yours is the same as mine. If it has the standard setting you will not want it weightier! I reckon there was a batch of them set up like this (so called sport mode) from the factory rather than set at the dealers at a later date. A dealer should be able to tell you if you car is due the steering update from the car's reg. in which case you'll get the heavier steering as part of the update. Worth an ask.

That reads a little back to front.

Surely Sport means less steering assist and a heavier wheel. Less input required to initiate turning.

Standard, greater assistance and lighter wheel but less feel? More input required to initiate turning.

Agreed, as I said the standard setting felt more sport like to me but obviously SUK don't think so.

I even had to sign a disclaimer to the effect that the car was now changed from standard and that I was happy with this!

Bizarre, but thanks for the info mate.

Will see if we come up with anything on vcds
