Grinding metal noise from rear, but only when I go backwards?!

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had the most horrendous grinding metallic sound coming from the back of the car when I went to reverse into my parking space at home last night.  Doesnt make the noise going forwards.  It really does sound as if I'm doing permanent damage by going backwards.  I've had problems with stones getting stuck in the front brakes (two or three times last year, thankfully none so far this year) and friend thinks this could be the problem but this sounds a hundred times worse.  Can anyone think what bits of the back of the car could also malfunction, break or whatever and cause it.  Looking underneath I can't see anything obvious, but I have no idea what I'm looking for tbh.

Any suggestions on how I could do some rudimentary checks to narrow it down or locate the problem would be greatly appreciated.  Its a 2010 plate Octavia.

Most of all, I need to work out whether I need it towed to the garage, or whether I can drive it there (avoiding reversing of course).

Thanks very much,

Vic

I'd be looking first at the rear disc back plates.

Thanks Lee,

So if I jack up each side and rotate each back wheel I should locate at least which side its coming from.  If I then take the wheel off the offending side... do you think it is a stone or the actual back plate ... can that come adrift?...or something jammed under the back plate?

Sorry if I sound like a complete novice, but I am.

It may just be a stone trapped behind the disk & back plate, ive had one in both front wheels & one in the rear now & it made a horrible noise, ive just replaced my rear back plates as they had corroded & were insecure & rattling but didnt make a loud noise. Best to take a wheel off & have a look.

Stone in the rear stoneguard. Sounds like the devil scratching a metal roof.

A bit of vigorous revering or a quick check with a screw driver should let you flick it out.

Rear brake guard plates.
