Oil consumption - is it normal?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

So my fabia vrs (2005 asz) is using a bit of oil. I have put 3ltrs in the last 10k miles. Should I be worried?

I'm about to do a service on it (prob next weekend) I cannot see any leaks other than oil from the intercooler pipes and egr (never been clean and no elephant mod)

I have read that oil coming from the egr means the seals have failed. Does this have an oil feed through it? I thought this just let exhaust gas in? Or does it do more?

My guess is that the turbo oil seals are leaking but it does not seem to smoke much. I get a bit of black when booting it and grey smoke on start but that's about it. (other than a couple days ago I had some blue smoke on start but not a lot and its the only time it has done it.)

So any ideas peeps ? How much oil does your vrs use?

Cheers

mine uses next to nothing maybe like 100 mls if that  but it has a slight weep on the oil level sensor on the sump .... some oil will go from the rocker cover in to the inlet which will coat your egr valve and your intercooler

have you had a really good look round for leaks? although 3ltrs in 10k isnt too bad really compared to some other cars

Thats nothing mate.

My fabia uses no oil worth mentioning between services. Serviced 6-12k depending on oil i use and when car feels like it needs it. Shorter milage if using platinum 5w40 and have had near 12k from longlife 5w30.

Can depend on type of driving you do mines nearly all motorway bar first n last mile.

My m5 tho..... well she uses between 500ml and 1l every 1k-1500 mile which is normal. Depends how i drive it tho

Ok so maybe I won't panic just yet. My mates golf uses similar for the mileage. Will panic when it uses a ltr a week!

Just to add as for driving. I have a 20 mile commute to work on Cornish A/B roads so it is mostly 40mph... Maybe that is the prob!

Volkswagen claims that their diesel engines might eat up to 1l of oil / 6-700miles so you should be ok.

that's good to know. I thought mine was bad using 750ml per 2-3k.

lost (burnt) roughly a litre between last two services (5-6k).

Never have to top mine up between oil changes :)

Done 15k over last year, similar 20 mile drive to work.

Mine is serviced every 10k and I generally top the oil up once between services and it's a minimal top up!
