Question about after fitting big turbo

Featured Replies

Evening all just after some advice really, I'm planning on fitting the GTB conversion end of next month, but I won't be able to take the car for mapping till some time later (few weeks/month later) Will I be okay in driving the car around on the current map from Awesome Gti in the mean time or is it not really ideal in doing so and will potentially cause damage to the new turbo?

Regards

Adam

Funny this.... I'm actually fitting my 2260 mid next month!

I've had to plan a load of stuff around it - such as getting the use of another car whilst it's being done, the custom exhaust getting made, and Kev being available to give me a hand!

John, aka Faboka, has told me that I'd be fine to use my current hybrid map on mine so long as I didn't boot it. So I imagine it'll be fine. I wouldn't fancy running around on it for months though...

Can you not get John to map it? I've paid for his email transfer service, and he's already emailed me a base map for the 2260 :)   The gear you need is very cheap off eBay to upload the map yourself.

That's a similar story as myself, I'm trying to plan a time when I can crack on with the car, it's going to be a few days of a job as I need to pull the box out and strip it down to strengthen the selector forks aswell as fit the LSD, thats before fitting the clutch, attacking the front bumper and slam panel to fit the FMIC and then fit the darkside manifold and 2260.

My intial thoughts was to take 2 days off at work and use the ramp and machining facilities we have to sort the box and fit the clutch and LSD and then over the weekend fit the remaining parts, (I'm hoping the downpipe is simply a case of welding the new flange on otherwise that screws the job up)

I'm leaning towards having John map my car as he is fairly local to myself so taking a trip over to him isn't a major issue, but the first option was Darkside but I know that there is a waiting list hence the question if it can be driven for a period of time on the original map.

I'm jealous that you've got a LSD! Which one have you gone for? I'm thinking a Wavetrac will make its way into my gearbox next year... ;)

I agree though, it's a bit of a nightmare trying to get everything organised! I'm lucky in that I've managed to get the use of a car for 2 weeks, which gives me loads of time to get it done properly and without compromise. I'm fitting the Airtec FMIC this weekend all being well, so that side of things will be sorted. Which one have you gone for?

The downpipe should indeed just be a case of chopping the original flange off and re-welding the new one on. I'm presuming you have a TIG?! I'm towing the car to a Longlife dealer after the turbo is fitted for a side-exit turbo-back custom system fitted :D

I would honestly go with John over anyone these days. I've had a go in 2 GTB cars that he's mapped. They are genuinely fantastic to drive! Such a difference over what I have now. If you buy a VCDS cable from eBay for about £7 then you can install VCDS-Lite to do the logging. You can also buy MPPS off eBay for less than £20! That will allow you to upload the new maps. Easy!

I went for the Quaife ATB in the end, fitted several Quaife's at work in the past and had one in a previous car and was impressed with how they worked and the overall build quality of them so made the choice easier in the end.

I unfortunately can't get access to a second vehicle so it's kind narrowing my options down to try and get the work done as quickly as possible without thing's going wrong hopefully.

I've got a THS intercooler which was fitted to my last car, was about the only thing on the front end which survived the crash, looks a tad untidy in places with a few scrapes but had it pressure tested and was fine so re-using that for now and when funds allow will replace it.

Thanks for the head's up on the cable, will look into it as it's always handy to have access to VCDS.

Buy a second (long?) gearbox/diff and get the LSD into that?
