1.4TSi any good?

Featured Replies

Straight from the dealers mine got 99ron fuel and thats all its had since, Surrey Rolling Road had it at 150bhp when its was only 2 weeks old, if you wanna spend £1,200 on a remap be my guest, its your money, there's just cheaper ways of getting to the same output but, each to thier own I guess.

err...????...............the £1,200 gets you 170PS & 300NM.......& having 50Nm more torque than even the 1.8TSI is great for overtaking..............

P.S.......dyno's can be out by up to 5%......so that's 7PS

Hmmm. £60 per hp Errrrr. I think I'll pass on that one.

  • Report of road test: Surprisingly good!  No problem with the feel of the engine. Nice gearbox, good handling. No stopwatches out of course but very satisfying. An SE with 16K on the clock.   It act

I don't know what ACT is?

Also I don't mind running on Supreme fuel instead of regular if it definitely adds something. I understand you have to let the car go through a couple of tankfuls before the engine has adjusted itself though?

The brochure says the octane "prescribed" is on a label inside the filler cap flap. If it says 95 there is no benefit from using 98.

ACT - cylinder deactivation - two of the four will shut down under certain circumstances, reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions further. :)

Ugh! No thanks!

Well, mine hasn't been on a dyno, but I have been monitoring fuel consumption. The first 3000 miles after I bought it I used exclusively Shell Fancy Nitro Rip-Off or whatever it's called, and then for the last 4000 miles I used mostly Shell Regular, with a couple of supermarket tanks thrown in. Obviously every journey is different, so it's not entirely scientific, but as best as I can work it out there is zero effect on fuel consumption, whereas the effect of how I use my right foot turns out to be quite significant!

I strongly suspect that there is no real performance improvement either.

If you want to be green then the super stuff might still be making fewer emissions, as I understand it to have a very slightly lower energy density than the regular, so getting the same fuel economy actually indicates a small increase in efficiency, but I guess the difference is small, and I'm not 100% sure that less energy means fewer hydrocarbons. Some people seem to think it has an effect in keeping the engine clean also, but I know nothing about this either way.

If you're just interested in monetary value or absolute performance though, I'm pretty sure there's little in it for the Octy, and certainly not enough to justify the extra cost. Other viewpoints are equally valid, of course!

In Australia the 1.4 requires 95 and is rated for 103kw (140hp). As a general rule published power outputs would be for the lowest acceptable fuel grade in common conditions (no overboost, standard atmosphere).

P.S.......dyno's can be out by up to 5%......so that's 7PS

Do we think ABT know this too, dyno's should be used as a comparision tool, before'n'after as for question fuel octane rating affecting performance, why do APR have different maps for different octanes ?

My 150bhp 264Nm at 2 weeks old was my factory benchmark albeit, on 99Ron fuel.

Does anyone here use the sports mode and if so is it worth it?

Also, if you use eco mode, does it feel gutless?

There are dynos' & there are Dyno's................ABT use a single roller dyno in a fully sealed test cell (room)(single roller are more accurate than more common double roller) they also make race cars for DTM (audi's) & formula-E, they have been doing chip tuning since 1980...............

As for the power produce from different grades of fuels......................no you don't say................. :dull: .............that is not an argument...................as a previous poster has stated that VAG are conservative with their power outputs & "stock" cars can make more, & this is happening a lot with the TSI engines.

Your car was 2 weeks old when it was put on the rollers, it would not have had time to bed the engine in, nor fully adapt to the fuel, I recon that your engine came out of the factory with slightly more power than quoted, the 99RON boosted a fraction & the rest is the "tolerance" of the rollers..............

Keep fuelling it with the same fuel (99Ron) & get at least 6K miles on the clock then get it dyno'ed at the same rolling road. .......................

....personally I wouldn't put such a new (2 weeks) engine on a dyno

They still advise a bit of running in (1500?). I thought all that was done at the factory.

Anyway, my new 1.4 should apparently now show up by early November - had to be flexible on colour and settle for white, otherwise would have to wait till April next year!

I use the Sport mode often, it does bring the car to life, it can be a PITA with DSG not upshifting till the redline but, I tend to manually shift earlier to keep within the torque band.

The Eco mode does reduce throtle responce and add some lag too which in traffic, isn't always a bad thing, I think the modes just give you some options, drive it and learn what works best for you.  The DSG does always give you the fast switch to Sport mode for the throtle/gearbox by simply pulling the gear selector back, not sure how easy/quick changing modes is in the manual though.

Sorry I didn't realise the wait was so long now for a factory order, mine took 12 weeks because I needed the Crew Protection for my kids in the back, not sure my life would be very good if I survived a side impact and my kid didn't, I know opinion is split on airbag explosions near children but, having seen some of the side impact crash testing videos my mind was made up.  Every father to their own I guess.

Enjoy your car when it gets here, no Elegance's in the order pipeline as they are now 0% on the Q4 deals ?

Changing modes is fiddly in the manual, but I just leave it in Normal. The major difference in modes is the linearity of the throttle response, it doesn't actually go any faster, so I work on the basis that there's no need for sport mode, just bury your foot in the carpet!

Of course, this is different with a DSG as it will alter the gear change, but in a manual the mode button is pointless (for the engine setting at least).

Returned from a weekend break to hear my car was parked at the dealers now. Went to see it and do the paperwork today, and will collect it on Thursday. So only a month from order to arrival.

But only because it was one of the normal quota!

Still, it looks good in white and I look forward to bringing it home. Also, due to time of year, it is nice to not have to pay road tax, MOT or major service, all due on the old car by October 30th !!

Also very pleased to hear e-sure only charging me £14 extra insurance for rest of year (which is now till end of September 2015.

Just need to find some reasonable mats for it - Wilko do some pretty nice ones for about £15 for 4.

Got some decent mats from T K Maxx, £15, but pulled out the Skoda fixing plugs from my carpets first.

Now running (out of curiosity) on Sport Mode. Haven't had a chance to do a reasonably long run but first thoughts are it feels nicer around town.

Makes it feel more like my previous 1.8 TSi, though I do understand the actual performance might not be different - just less thought to produce the same effect !!

Slightly heavier steering feels better too.

Will decide after a longer spell with the car.

Same applies to stop-start. At present I feel happier with it off but later on will give it a longer try out.

There is an individual mode which let's you separate the elements. I use this with engine set to normal, steering in sport and air con in eco mode.

I also turn off the stop-start sometimes, but even when it's on I tend to take a judgement on whether to let it stop or not. For example, at lights that I think won't be red for much longer I keep my foot on the clutch to keep the engine running (although, I used to do this before I had stop-start, as I often sit in 1st ready to go anyway).

Okay, first complaint - worst owner's manual ever !! After I get my MA in electronics I'll maybe know what they are talking about.

Can anyone tell me how to reset the clock when they go back tomorrow !!? Please?

Wow, the clocks go back tomorrow?! I hadn't realised, thank god you couldn't read the manual!

Err, resetting the clock in the car, I have no idea, sorry!

Page 12 of the manual and involves using the mileage reset button ahead of the steering wheel, but much more easily done in the infotainment. You reminded me to go out and do mine, so thanks for that

Found it - I didn't realise Infotainment was a separate manual. Played with it tonight and left it an hour slow to be right for tomorrow. I think that's enough for today!!

I'm assuming the SatNav variants set their clock automatically from the GPS signal?  If not, I'll have to remember to change mine in the morning...

Six quid a set in Asda, rear mats fairly small, but all provide good cover for the classier (and proper fitting) Skoda mats underneath. Look better than a piece of old carpet during winter!

Yes, I could have got cheaper ones in T K Maxx too, they had 3 or 4 sets at least, as do WILKO, all from about £8 to £20 for 4, but the ones I chose just suited me. (The new  car came without any mats.)

By the way, one minor bug. Does anyone else notice the reflection of the chrome surround of the right hand dashboard vent? I keep seeing it in the driver's door mirror.

Might get used to it, or if not I'll try a neat strip of narrow black tape over the chrome trim.

Edited by ednmra

You get used to the reflections - I have, at least! (And I don't expect my cheapo mats to last beyond the winter, but I got two sets at the time. Doesn't matter how expensive mats are, the driver's always looks shabby after a while.)
