See photos, now I attempted to find the actual figures for the differences between 1st and 2nd gear ratios, BUT clearly recall that when the dry 7 speed was launched there was talk of an extra low "Granny" first gear, to minimize friction when pulling away from a standstill.

Seemed reasonable.

So guessing should be about twice the MPH/1000rpm between 1st and 2nd, say 5mph again 10mph at tickover revs.

But this is not what I am getting.

Per the speedo the speeds in 1st and 2nd are identical at identical engine rpm's.

N.B.

I intended to attempt to use the satnav also.

regards

Marcus

PS

Can anyone attempt to explain the occurance.

Has my(and other transmissions) got 2 identical gear ratios for the 2 bottom gears?

Or wot?

PS

I apologise for the gibberish earlier post, 9.5MPh????, scheesh!!!

Have you tried holding the car in manual and about 2000rpm to see what happens if you change between 1st and 2nd manually?

Ian

Gear ratios are fixed by the number of teeth on each of the engaged pair of gears, so any deviation from the fixed ratios from moment to moment can only be due to some slip in the transmission like clutch slip.

You can't test it like this.

Go to 2000rpm or higher and hold it.

At that rpm your not even pressing the gas, it's the car ability to puxe at that rpm so it won't stall, at times can be scary because as the rpm lowers a tad the engine management tell it to rev up pulling the car forward. That second pic could of been taken exactly when the rpm was lowering and the engine management didn't kick in

No revs were steady for a considerable time, before the photograph was taken.

However I came at it from the other end(so to speak) I picked second and held at about 1500 RPM then snicked her into 1st, DEFINATELY a different ratio as rpm's shot up, and then back down when 2nd re-selected.

BUT

Regardless sommat odd about the very low speed change from 1st to 2nd, at least per the gear indicator in the dash, without any commensurate change in road speed.

cheers

Marcus
