White smoke and diesel smell from exhaust

Featured Replies

Hey guys

I got this problem mentioned in the title, right i think it's a Boost leak because my intercooler is damaged. So what's the best option without messing around with the crash bar or losing a fog light etcc shall go with standard? Any link guys please

Thanks

Mine does this - really bad at times which makes it look like an oil leak, but actually it is just diesel (which is oil I guess)

I have a new set of injectors to fit so hoping that cures it.

A boost leak would only really manifest on power.  Does yours smoke all the time?

It's not a lot of smoke just little but strong smell of diesel , the thing is I just brought the car recently like 3 weeks ago and not driven it properly only driven it on way back home 150 miles when I brought it and since 3 weeks it's been stood for 3 week outside on the drive getting the mods done

Past two days moving it on drive/garage I can smell diesel and white smoke come out of the exhaust on idle

So this smoke is only happening on a dead cold engine then? If so, then it means that the combustion chambers aren't up to temperature. If you hold the engine at a fast idle (or take the car round the block) it should clear. Beyond that, it's a bit endemic to some of these engines because the glowplugs are only activated when the ambient temperature is below 5C.

What year/engine code is it? The three character engine code can be found on the options label (under the boot carpet or in the service log book).

It also happens when I floor it sometimes a puff of white smoke

Ah, if you're getting smoke in that situation, then if it's white white, get a combustion gas test done, because you may be in the early stages of head gasket failure. Also look carefully for signs of oil in the coolant expansion bottle and/or water in the sump. A white "mayonaise" compound i nthe cam cover just means that the engine isn't getting up to temperature often enough.

If it's a blueish colour, then you may need new valve stem oil seals.

If I had to guess, I would suspect the turbo oil seals. If it really smells like diesel, I would have the compression tested. How many miles does it have? What mods have you done?

Right okay lads I'll get that test done millage is 86,000

Mods at min

Milltek exhaust

The turbo's less likely, but when it really goes you get a James Bond style smokescreen, and an oil consumption of about 1 mile per liter!
