Advise needed. Which Bluetooth module?

Featured Replies

Hi all. I recently purchased a 2010 Yeti with Bolero head unit but no Bluetooth.

I'd like to be able to stream music from my phone to the car speakers so I'm thinking about buying a Bluetooth module.

The problem I'm having is that, after doing some research on the forum I have realized that there's plenty of different modules and I'm not too sure which one I need to get.

Also I think most people are after voice control, calls via Bluetooth etc...I just want to be able to stream music through the Bolero unit so maybe not the same type of mod?

Could someone please give me an idea on cost (cost of unit and cost of fitting) and where to get the module from. I've read on the forum about a Polish website selling them but I'm not sure which module I should be getting.

Final question...whichever module I get, will i be able to keep it if I upgrade to Columbus?

Thanks in advance for any help

If you have maxidot, you can do it for 150 quid or so with a loom, mic and antenna from www.carsystems.pl (£50 or so) and a premium 3c8035730a/b/c/d module from ebay for about £100. It can be done slightly cheaper with a 5k0 .. d or above / 7p6 .. j or above module, but only a bit and these are not quite as high-end in functionality terms (although the main option if you don't have maxidot).

Avoid older modules such as 3c8 with no suffix letter, 5n0 .. a/b/c or 1k0 as these don't support streaming for example.

Either of the choices I mentioned above will work with a Columbus in future.

Hi, thank you for your reply. The Yeti does have a maxidot.

So, to sum up I need a loom, mic and antenna from carsystem.pl and the module from ebay. Will any between a b c or do? Most of the ones on ebay seem to be the 3c8035730a model.

What about fitting and setting it up? Is there a guide or do you know anyone up north (Yorkshire area) who could do the work?

Thanks again for your help

Forgive my ignorance but I'm noticing that you can do more than I thought with these headunits, modules etc...

One of the bluetooth modules (3c8035730d) also offers WLAN?? How can that be used? What are the advantages?

Do most people here stick to the OEM stereos (Bolero, Columbus etc) or do you recommend replacing it with something more advanced.

I'm really new to all this and in a learning phase so any advice will be highly appreciated

I would stick to OEM if it were me.

The main if not only difference between a to d units is the WLAN capability on d units. It means you can use your internet connection to act as a wifi hotspot either for others in the car or for using your phone for satnav or spotify etc. It only applies in premium or RSap mode whereby the phone is disabled and car takes over SIM which without the WLAN option would also disable internet.

RSap only works for some phones though eg Samsung but not others eg iPhones. In the latter case you use the secondary option of connecting by HFP, in which case WLAN isn't an option anyway. The other benefit of d units (and poss a/b/c) is that you connect a different phone as a media player and for calling.

Its pretty easy to fit yourself, plenty of guides here if you do a search...

Really appreciate your advise. If I do try myself would I not need help with coding?

No prob. Yes but there are a few members with vcds who will do it for beer vouchers in the area.. check out the vcds owners map in the vcds section.
