Octavia gearbox reverse kick-out and noise

Featured Replies

Hello!

So I got this Skoda Octavia. it´s 1.6L 1999 model.

problem is with reverse gear. I can select it fine, no crunching or anything, but after I start driving it gets this gradually increasing grinding noise. The faster I drive, the sooner it kicks in, and eventually it kicks out of the gear (maybe not fully) but enough.

Hard to describe. I searched through forum, but couldn´t find any good answers.

is it possible that gear linkage adjustment will fix this ? or the gearbox is shot ?

All forward gears work fine, no noise or anything out of ordinary.

I suspect the gearbox is faulty rather than the linkages which typically only alter how easy it is to select a gear. If the linkages were out of adjustment you would have difficulty in selecting any gears, not just issues with reverse.

shifter itself is quite stiff, but works fine.

I was wondering, maybe it is not shifting all the way into gear, and then kicks out, as soon as I drive it.

I can drive it without a problem, if not under big load (like uphill)  and not reversing fast. but if I do it longer, it begins.

Will look into new box then..

On an early 02K gearbox, it could be a worn part in the shift mechanism on top of the box.

As this is a non-UK car, it is possible that an 02J gearbox is fitted. In this case, a broken 'relay driver' in the shift mechanism on top of the box could be the cause.

What is the three chararter gearbox code?

Sorry for the late reply. I couldn't locate the gearbox code. any hints ?

Could it be possible that it has something to do with the engine and gearbox mounts being worn out ? because I can drive very slowly without load and any extra accel - with just a noise, but as soon as I try to accel, it kicks back, and tries to drop out of gear.

I suppose engine on this one is AEH ?

offtopic -- what is a shift over valve ?

Is there a really big, like about 75mm each way big, paper sticker on the boot floor? If so, then all the option codes are on it. One of them is the gearbox code.

Also, ZF Transmissions recommend changing ATF every 80_000km.

I will check for the sticker.

And it´s manual, not auto.
