CAm belt or chain, octavia 1.9tdi 4x4

Featured Replies

Morning all,

I need to know if my 1.9 TDI (56 plate) is cambelt or chain? And when is the general idea about when to change it? I drive a lot of miles and the car is starting to feel it now (600 + miles per week)

I also have a bit of a hum coming from the back end (the car not me!!) which increases in pitch as I increase speed.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance.

AS far as I know all 1.9 TDI's are belt - 5 years and 60k miles is the general rule from memory, albeit we took our ATD Fabia to 80k miles before changing it...

Yeah I'd change it every 60k or 4yrs but Audi change intervals are 5yrs 75k just depends on which you choose? Throw a water pump at it as well just to be sure

As for the noise could be wheel bearing but they suffer with saw toothing of the rear tyres so check the rear tyres for the tread stepping this causes a wheel bearing type noise!

Hope this helps

Dealer changed the belt on my 1.9TDI 4x4 when I bought it at 3 years, and it was done a year early (but saved my doing it a year later!)

So I fairly confident they are a belt that needs replacing every 4 years.

Thanks for the replies, best i get mine into the garage then!!

AFAIR they did cut the belt to 3 years, but have changed it to 4.

My 4x4 made a whine from the rear end when I got it. started at about 60 and got louder the faster I went, worse on the overrun too.

I noticed that the rear tyres were a different brand and one was 50% worn while the other was brand new. Put 2 on there the same and the whine went straight away, I believe it was coming from the diff.

You should always relace 4x4 tyres 2 at a time and put the new tyres on the rear though I have foind they tend to wear at a relatively even rate.
