How the hell do I turn it off ?

The traffic disruption warning the lady in the dash gives me, sometimes randomly, sometimes too late, but always annoyingly,

I've looked everywhere in menus, MFD, media, radio, Nav, TMC etc, found nothing

On my Columbus I am sure that it is in the "extras" section, not sure though but it is in there (as I turn mine off and just use the TMC) so I would have though it was similar for your unit.

Deffo not seen it in extras, and she announces even when I'm listening to the iPod through the MDI, so it over rides everything as far as I can tell

I think its in setup, then navigation on the head unit.

When a traffic announcement is playing you should see a pop-up on the screen with two options - 'Cancel' or 'Disable'. 'Cancel' will stop that particular announcement there and then whereas 'Disable' will stop them forever (or until you enable them again in the Setup.)

Nope, never had anything show up on the screen like that whilst the warning is being vocally delivered

I think this is part of dynamic route calculation, you need to switch it off in options see page 22 of your radio manual, alternatively you might switch off voice announcement completely.
