Remap insurance

Featured Replies

After a very friendly chat to the bloke at Shark, I decided to give Elephant (my insurers) a call to ask about the extra premium which could be added to my insurance should I have it remapped.

Apparently, Elephant don't cover remaps but they do cover chipping... I thought chipping was a by gone art form long since replaced by remaps.

People on other forums have had their remaps covered by elephant or admiral (same company) and even some people on this forum have apparently mentioned having their remaps covered by admiral/elephant.

Anybody with any knowledge care to give me any help, I really want to remap the Octavia but don't want to wait until the end of May when my policy is up for renewal.

Am I just stuck between a rock and a hard place, or should I give them another call and hopefully speak to somebody who knows what a remap actually is?

I THINK they cover it the same. When I asked admiral (just enquired) about having it remapped. They said some thing along the lines of 'does the chip increase the power by more than 10%' best ringing them to clarify. You don't want to be caught out by them. And God knows they'll try.

The guy at Elephant asked me 'why would you want to do this?'  I honestly felt like saying 'To make it faster, why would you not want it done?'   Though, I bit my tongue.

Thing is though, Aren't chipping and remapping different, albeit with a similar effect on performance?

Yeah they are. Although whether Mr call centre chap knows that is a different question. Maybe speak to a line manager.

Some very good & knowledgable Insurance Brokers on this Forum that understand Remaps and Modifying.

They can find you good Insurance cover that will actually be covering the vehicle & you if ever there is a need to claim.

It's not really a question a call agent should be asking in my opinion. They need to treat it as a fact, rather than asking your opinion on why you want to do it.

I think my engine insurance company listed it as engine chipping or something. And gave an option for power percentage upto 25% upto 50% yada yada...

Sounds a perfectly reasonable question, especially as some insurers treat a remap for economy differently to one for extra performance.

I had the same issue when considering either a remap or a tuning box. Admiral said they would cover the latter, but not the former. That was despite others on here having remaps declared on their Admiral policy! In the end I switched to Adrian Flux (with remap) for a few pounds less than my Admiral renewal quote (standard).

To be honest, I've kind of gone off of the whole remap idea. I think I bought the wrong car, should've gone for the VRS petrol. I spent too much time worrying about economy and not enough about fun and aesthetic appearance.

I've only had the thing for like 3 months! CURSES!

Wait till I've had it a year and if the VRS bug is still inside of me, trade it in. What a waste of money!

Mainstream insurers who have callcenter staff with little or knowledge or experience or ability to do anything outwith the coumputer menus will always be a challenge for non standard cars. Admiral were going to cancel my insurance when I told them I fitted a RARB a while back even though when I had originally checked I was told it was not an issue. After much discussion and going up to managers etc, it was sorted out. All I can think is that the bloke thought it was a Roll Cage. They covered my remap no problem and the RARB actually pushed the price up more!

Hi all, I have a Skoda Fabia (MK1) VRS that was remapped to 170BHP (so more than 10% of the factory original). Being the honest motorist that I am, I hunted around and could only find one insurer that will insure my car as is: Flux Direct. Helpful though they were, there was a load of restrictions lumped on my policy and I want to ensure I talk to other insurers to make sure I get a good enough deal.

I see sky insurance, Elephant and Admiral named as possibles, can you offer any other alternatives?

Any suggestions appreciated.
