heel-and-toe difficult on VRS

Featured Replies

I find the brake pedal and accelerator too far apart to safely heel and toe, especially with light summer shoes. I was hoping the pedals would be closer together than on non-vrs models, but that is not the case.  Anyone on here manage to heel-and-toe with their VRS? Care to put a photo up showing how you place your foot?

I thought you couldn't heel-toe on VAG cars as it cuts the throttle when the brake is pressed?

That is what I thought, unless the map was altered

Interesting - never knew this. What's their reasoning? Safety I suppose?

I can't heel and toe with this car either (non-VRS model), so I make do with a decent blip and downshift prior to braking (provided I'm not going to end up doing a million RPM in the target gear). Unfortunately though that's nowhere near as useful as a proper heel and toe in certain circumstances.

Is there any way a genius VCDS guru such as yourself could ever code in Engine Rev matching to gear selection on downshifts a la Nissan 370Z manual?

I would leave my car with you for a week if that's how long it took to code.... But am betting that this is an out of the park super duper long shot idea which would require extra controllers etc.

Just a thought as blipping the throttle on downshift (easier with this free reving engine compared to previous 2.0TDi VAG engines) can be hit and miss sometimes and jerky if totally messed up!

It isn't a VCDS thing, that's a remap :)

The engine does respond to the throttle even with the brake and clutch pedal pressed, I just checked on my morning commute. At a standstill in any case. Still to check when rolling.

If only I could turn my foot 90 degrees...

I find it rather disappointing that on such a sporty model, with a manual gearbox, they didn't think about proper driving...

On the other hand, in this video, around 1:36 in, this guy seems to be heel-and-toe double clutching with a MK3 VRS:

The "Brake Over Accelerator" function is usually a protection feature so that if the accelerator is stuck down for whatever reason the driver can regain normal control by pressing the brake pedal.

I would be very suprised if any manufacturer provided a codable option to enable/disable this.

that would make sense for a DSG box, but on a manual you can just press the clutch if there's an issue with the throttle. In that sense left-foot braking is different, as this happens with the clutch engaged.

Even with a manual it would allow you better control to drive the car to a safe place using the brake if there was really a problem without the engine revving away.

With the numerous product recalls for fault pedals/throttles in the last few years, most manufactures are likely to choose to take this safer option.

Found exactly the same driving home from work today, from gentle left foot braking and even harder braking I can still try and accelerate, with the car in gear or neutral... But I just can't comfortably get my right foot on both pedals to heel and toe unlike the wife's mx5. Also find the throttle a bit dead in the response side so it needs a big punch to spool the engine up to rev match

Do you have the performance mode selection? I find it to be responsive enough in sport mode to rev match on down shifts, with a nice (but fake) sound blip, but as you say, the pedals are just too far apart to do it while braking.

It's interesting though that apparently on our cars we don't have this safety feature of brake overruling throttle!

In sport mode its easier as I don't have to press the pedal as far to get the same rpm due to its increased sensitivity. yes I can rev match when not braking which makes down shifting for an overtake nicer but I don't like the sound generator in sport or the pedal response during general driving
