Replacing / Repairing Split Boost Pipe

This morning one the flexible boost pipes on my 4x4 decided to burst.  There is a split I can get my finger into in the flexible pipe that joins the turbo to the solid pipe which goes to the intercooler.

 

I shall be giving TPS a call in the morning but in case I can't get a replacement straight away then is there a temporary repair option?  The pipe in question is curved and attached to the turbo and exhaust so probably gets quite hot.

 

Also I'm thinking that if I remove the air intake between the filter box and turbo I might be able to get the pipe out through the top, thus not needing to jack the car up and remove the armour plating, is this doable?

 

The engine is a BMM.

For a temp fix you could chop it either side of split and use a section of hard pipe as a joiner with pipe clips.

It's on the bend, so I think I would struggle to join it with a hard pipe.  The pipe bends through a right angle.

I tried pipe clips on a split turbo pipe on my Golf. They blew off in 2nd gear.

 

Can't think of any other bodge fix that isn't a really really bad idea...

I was thinking some sort of repair tape and lots of it.  Possibly with some aluminium tape on top to try and reflect some heat.

 

I notice Halfords do hose repair tape, which could be worth a try.

Right, got a new one from TPS this morning and got the old one off. Good news is that you can get to it from the top by removing the intake pipe. When it stops raining I'll fit the new one.

The new had a captive jubilee clip which so much easier than the metal spring clamp thing on the old one.

It does seem to be a common failure on the BMM engines, found quite a few German and Czech forums with the same issue.  The replacement pipe seems to be thicker as well as being red, so I suspect it's an uprated version.

Yes - it certainly looked a better part than the OE one so I'm hopeful it'll last.  One thing you have just reminded me of though is that I must check everything is tight and not leaking as since then I've noticed a slight tendency for it to smoke a bit more (no dpf).

Think I have the same issue again seven years on.  No fault codes yes but a very distinctive wooshing noise and that same pipe looks to be quite oily.

 

Just need to find the part number again now

 

Just managed to have a look at this and, although I'm now covered in black crap, have confirmed  it's the same pipe that has gone again -small split at the back near the turbo...   so given the cost to replace last time was stupid and the part is only about £40 I'll probably have a go myself

Must not like the heat?  Maybe a bit of foil reflective tape or insulation shield would help?  In another 7 years you may not own the car though!

Well I finally got the part and fixed it this morning.

 

Doable from above provided you remove the Flexi pipe from the MAF to the egr and have small hands.  Still a bit of a bugger though as the clip for the turbo end needs to be removed from underneath and your effectively working blind.

 

For those doing it themselves I'd recommend putting the turbo end on first and putting the clip on the boost pipe and the levering it onto the connector as opposed to trying to fit the clip into the groove in the connector.  Once that's on a bit of oil on the hard pipe and inside the boost pipe makes it easier to push on and get positioned before fitting the band clamp to hold it all in place
