2 second Linux question...

Featured Replies

Linux and Windows use different and incompatible file systems don't they?

So if I build a knoppmyth/mythTV linux based HTPC there is no way that I can share files between it and my windows PC? If so, that's a shame :(

They use different files systems, but Linux is much more flexible and supports reading/writing to Fat32 and also NTFS (although I think that might still be "experimental, but I had no probs with it) so you can share files. Samba is your friend for sharing Windows drives :D

Chris

It doesn't matter what file system you are using because the windows system isn't reading the linux disk (and vice versa) , it's just accessing a share on the other machine and transferring the file over the network.

I'm building one (KnoppMyth) right now too, so 'SNAP' (sorry if this isn't too helpful :().

Being using Linux in one shape or another since 1998, so if you need any help, fire away.

 I'm sure I'll be posting and looking for guidance then

Probably ordering the upgrades for my current PC this weekend, and will build a knoppmtyh box out of the leftovers. I need a freeview card so will probably go for the Avermedia DVB T771, seems to work well with knoppmyth.

BTW have you seen this site:

Yeh, I had seen that site, not made much use of it as I'm just at the stage of assembling the hardware.

Like you, it made of 'left overs' but mine is REAL cheap as I'm going to use the Win-TV-go (
