How easy is it to change the engine water

Featured Replies

When I had the bother with my car a while back, my dad topped up the radiator on the car, but as far as I know he didn't put any anti-freeze in, and I'm thinking that this is somethings that going to need some attention in the next month or so.

So presumably I need to empty all the water out, and then get some water and mix with anti-freeze. How much anti-freeze do I need, and what kind (I'm assuming not the same as windscreen anti-freeze?). I think the level may be slightly lower than the recommended anyway, so perhaps I can get away with topping up with just anti-freeze. What do you think?

On the Golf??

Ensure the engine is cool, put the heater on full heat, remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator, remove the radiator cap and the expansion tank cap and try not to get your feet wet.

Put it all back together and fill with water/antifreeze. Pump the top radiator hose by squeazing it in your hand to circulate the water. Run the engine up to temperature keeping an eye on the levels and temp guage.
