Using Heat Wrap on Resistors for LED's?

I'm looking at fitting the rear LED's on the Yeti, if I get the CANBUS issues then resistors will be needed, I've done some looking into using a heat wrap (such as used on exhausts) on the resistors to protect other wiring and plastics as they can get rather hot.

Does anyone see any issues with doing it this if I'm not able to seat them anywhere?

If you wrap the resistor you are then stopping it being cooled by the air, which is what it needs to do, because continuous heat will cause it to fail. The important thing is to position it so that it doesn't come in contact with something, other than a heat sink.

As Graham says, don't cover the resistors, this will significantly reduce their life.

 

The resistors have holes at either end so that you can screw them directly to the body work behind the clusters / rear bumper.

 

I wasn't brave enough to do this as I wanted the option to return the car to stock if required. I therefore used velcro and heavy duty tie-wraps as pictured in this thread...

I presume you are fitting a set of the new LED style Yeti rear lights?

Do you realise that it is only the rear (and possibly the brake lights) are LED's, and not the others?

There has been a thread about this and the problems someone had recently.

It is yes, I'd just assumed they were the same as had seen fitted to the elegance, but didn't know it wasn't all the lights in the unit.

Thanks for the heads up Graham, I'll have a look for the thread you mentioned and pop into the dealers as they've got an L&K I can use to check.

Why not find the wattage of the resistors and use a higher power rating / use two of twice the value in parallel / all of these and use a heatsink or part of the body as one. Also be aware that if the resistors get too hot ,then it might be wise to use plumbing type solder with a higher melting point, as even though standard solder will not melt at these temperatures, the constant heat cycles can cause it to fail .
