Re: Potential Purchase...

Dont, pay retail for anything and minimise the depreciation loss.

I found the type of car I wanted on autotrader, then made a list of the 30 biggest dealer groups in the country, cruised through all their websites to find the absolute bargain basment prices for the model I was after.

With all that ammunition, I got a sizeable amount off RRP and I was chuffed to bits.

On another thread there is a new (64) 15/16k spaceback being discussed as the dealer has it up for under 11k, so there are monster discounts out there to be had.

You're looking at Fabia's which are about to be replaced so dealers will shove them out cheap. I've done this before, buying the old model - 32% off! Good luck

  • Pretty much, yes. Im sure George will come over soon and tell you all the ins and outs (this is his territory haha) but they corrected a majority of the oil consumption issues when they did an engin

  • 10k isn't a lot of mileage by any stretch, so is the deal based on 10k enough for you? In which case I'd stick to a cheaper petrol engine, the new 1.2 TSI units are supposed to be very good.

  • Just go into the dealer and see what vRS are sitting at the dock ready and waiting. Two minutes on their computer and they'll be able to tell you what's available nationally to call to their dealershi

Cars cost what ever in depreciation depending on how long you keep them.

£20,000 plus cars might lose £3,000 a year in 3 Years,

Many cars cost £2,500 a year,

A £9,000 - £12,000 car might still be worth £6 - £7,000 in 5 years so cost £1,000 a year.

Skodas often come discounted and unless you buy a Keeper you get rubbish offers when selling.

but maybe not as bad as with a SEAT, where Independents are not interested.

The MK2 Fabias are at the last models being built, and a All New Fabia is available from January.

so who knows if the car you buy is desirable in 3 or 4 years time.

But an Estate car is quite often desirable to someone as a used car.

As far as Citigo. Up!, Mii

Lots of them , lots on PCP etc, lots going back on forecourts, equalls a glut of them,

and not exactly a car that is going to be desirable at 6 years old.

But could be a car that only costs £1,500 a year if it is a Keeper, for 5-6 years.

The PCP agreed trade in value is usually less than it'd actually be worth.

If you regularly change cars, buying by HP or outright will cost you more than a pcp deal would - regardless of manufacturer.

Who gave you the £7k valuation? What's the cars mileage and spec?

  • Author

Fair comment, but I guess I need to see value in changing where perhaps there is none?

Sometimes the same manufacturer will give you a better deal, sometimes only if you darken another's door.

As above, who gave you the quote, and what's the mileage and spec? It might be correct for a trade in value. If it was a we'll buy your car site, then yes they sometimes are well off the mark

It was a Skoda dealership, I pushed for £7k for mine (which isn't unrealistic) but I guess I am happy to stick with the Mazda for the very little I'd gain from switching

Sorry GadgetMan, I missed your second message. Yeah, it was a Skoda dealership in Plymouth that gave me a trade price of £7k for my car (I forgot to clarify that £4k of that is owed to a finance company as I am currently on HP with mine. I got a cracking deal on the car as I worked for a garage at the time). So essentially it is a £3k deposit, which isn't that bad I guess... Still would've liked more, but looking at eBay and Autotrader (and the sheer lack of Burgandy Mica Ventures), it may be about right.

At this point there is loads more research to be done, but I was hoping I could use peoples experiences of Skodas and other makes (of the same class) to assist in making a narrowed decision. I'm still looking at the Juke, but Skodas are the cheapest with 0% at the moment I believe?

My car has 18k miles on the clock (just under actually) and is pretty much brand new apart from minor stone chips at front and two on the left rear door. It's been well looked after and is just over 2 years old (registered July 2012).

The new Monte Carlo (well, what has been posted on google) looks god awful in comparison to the MK2 shape... So, meh, I dunno :(

The wonderful things about cars is, when driving them you do not see the outside unless you look at the reflection in shop windows

or you see a similar car on the road.

Fugly & odd cars appeal to many people and put many off equally,

if not then there would be no Jukes, Fiat 500 L, Qubo / Nemo/ Bipper, Mini Countryman / Paceman, Fabia Mk2, Roomster, Yeti,  etc

They are just a means of Transportation in the end.

It often happens that cars that fell through every branch of the Ugly tree are good cars to drive and own, and often the most practical.

Like ugly babies /children, you can learn to live with them and grow to like & even love them.

the 'All New 3rd generation Fabia' is a OK looking car in comparison to a MK2 Fabia IMO.

but then it is each to their own.

For me its the balance. I clean my car 3 times a week and do any detailing I can for it and the presentation is just as important as the tech inside. The road noise on the Mazda2 is annoying, but bareable. I will find out what the pros and cons are between the two when I take a test drive tomorrow but the Juke and MK2 MC are better ones for me at the moment

The Captur (same car) is much better than the Juke.  Juke is smaller and interior is awful

Captur (and new Clio) looks like it's had a nasty side impact - crass styling IMO.

This I would very much doubt. Generally small cars remain desirable even when 6yrs+ old. They become cheap enough for youngsters to buy and insure and for when I car families decide to become two etc.

'Desirable if reliable'.

£99 a month gets Young People cars these days, and will be more common in years to come.

The UK is sinking under the weight of Used Cars at 3-4 years old plus,

& the Car Trade has not adjusted yet to them Leasing Cars and the glut of Used ones back into trade.

Prices need to become realistic.

Consider the poor build quality or Quality Control from the factory of many of the Up! - Mii -Citigo

& how they are fairing to 3 year old, we will see. Only time will tell how they are a 6 years old.

They might just turn out to be the next Ford Ka or Street Ka.

ie.

Find a good one if you can.  Avoid the Lemons.

the VWG are really building and selling the Car equivalent of the 'BIC' lighter.

Cheap or even not so cheap but basically disposable.

But some are still fine years later, and others are binned..

Well, despite the controversy with small cars... I made a decision today in a dramatic turn. I am one piece of paper away from being the owner of a 13 plate Audi A1 1.6 TDI S-Line! Despite being diesel, this car stood miles above the others and I am lucky that I managed to get this one at just over £11k :)

  • Author

Well, I thought it was a firm choice but at 11.40% APR and a PCP style agreement over 4 years, turned out to be £20k in total... No thanks! So, I'm back to square one.

Can you add anything to the Black Edition Fabia (in the way of equipment)?

It would be Dealer Option stuff that could be added.

There are going to be Mk2 Fabia bargains on new cars to be had leading up at the end of the year & the All New 3rd Generation Fabias becoming available.

Their are cars in Stock not yet at Dealers that Skoda will need to get shifted.

Since I'm not really a fan of the MK3 (and the offers wont be great on release) I'll go for a Black Edition now and by the time it comes to swap up, I'll look at the MK3 again to see if the options have changed.

A Black Edition in Black or in White?

I've heard they're aren't many black edition Fabia left

Black I think, wasn't too sure lol. There is one at my Skoda that they have been trying to sell me for a while lol

Given that I do around a 40 mile round trip each day (not major mileage at all), would it be a silly idea to consider a vRS? The spec is perfect (apart from basic air condition/fans and no sat nav) for me and I love the look of it. Still, they don't sell them new anymore do they, and I doubt they'd be on a 0% deal. Feel kinda bottle necked into the vehicles they couldn't shift to be honest. They aren't bad by any means, but its just so limited.

Do you mean there is one sitting, and it has basic A/C and no Sat Nav?

Ones that dealers have ordered and not Registered & in the UK might be specced up.

Yes they sell them,

there are ones all over the country,

you can get one with under 1000 miles from a Dealer (Demo) for under £14,000

There are ones unregistered that you can get for a good deal.

They are cheap to insure, and £145 VED.

Good on fuel,  35- 45 MPG. and can be near 50 mpg on a 40 mile journey.

20 mile trip each way you can get 40 + mpg easily.

99 ron petrol.

The vRS doesn't come with climate or sat nav (that I have seen) but it ticks every box for me apart from the sat nav (which I am hoping you can add to it?).

The Black Edition is nice, but the extra MPG isn't that impressive over the vRS considering the vRS churns out 178bhp and the 1.2 tsi only hits 104bhp. Both 45 litre tanks aren't they? My Mazda hits 56mpg (apparently) and I'm worried that the drop in mpg will be rather noticeable (although the DSG should be quite good on balancing the economy?).

Would like some opinions at this point as it down to the vRS or the 1.2 TSI Black Edition. Important factors are that the vRS would be on finance with interest (and minimal warranty and no servicing I'd assume) and the BE would be on 0% with 3 years warranty and servicing.

Edited by Tackyauto

a vRS has DSG and 180 ps,  there is no real comparison with a 1.2 TSI 105 ps manual.

45 Litre Tanks. but holds more than 45 Litres.

You can get anything from 320-350 miles from a tank to doing 480 miles plus when Venting a tank.

Look at the Skoda Configurator. Look at Autotrader and see what are being sold.

I have 'Climatronic Automatic Air Conditioning',  and Sat Nav was an Option.

A new car can have the extra optional 2 years warranty to take it to 5 years.

Or a Skoda Approved Extended Warranty can be purchased for an extra 2 years after 3 years,

but not as cheap as extending before the car is registered.

Servicing is the same cost on a 1.2 TSI as a 1.4TSI,

& Service Plans are available.

Ok, that's awesome :). It's at just over £20k with every conceivable extra I can put on it. There must be one sitting around at this spec that I could get a decent deal on... Although its the APR that would sting me. May end up with the BE if the deals aren't great.
