Diesel Powerflex Lower Engine Mount on the VRS

Featured Replies

Just thought id share my experience on the new bush iv fitted to the Vrs.

I went to Awesome GTI last weekend to get Cruise Control fitted, it was a 3 hour job but passed the time by watching the F1. After it was fitted i asked the chaps about the lower engine mount.

Now im getting 200bhp iv noticed at some points in the rev range when changing gear, it felt like there was too much rock, maybe better described as damping from the engine and it wasnt as crisp a change as i wanted. I mentioned the Vibratechnics complete lower mount, they had it in stock but for me the price was far too steep - over £100. I asked what they had in the way of superpro or powerflex bushes, immediately they both told me to steer clear of the superpro bushes (i didnt ask why), i said i didn't want to feel too much vibration in the cabin so they pointed me to this:

Its advertised for the diesel, as i guess its a bit softer then the petrol version so this seemed to be a good shout.

Briskoda discount later and i walked away £25 down but with a shiny red chunk of rubber.

Fitted it later that day (after relishing in using the CC from Manchester to Derby) Its a very very easy job, and took about 45mins. I cut the old one out and used my vice to press the new bush in and bolted it back on.

Verdict - Chuffed. The sag/rock/damping during high RPM gear changes has all but gone, there's a very slight amount of vibration through the peddles now but its barely noticeable and the feedback in throttle input is much improved.

Overall, for £25 i dont think you could find a better mod for the money.

I guide on fitting can be put up if anyone wants (i like taking pics along the way during mods)

Cheers,

Sam

Echo all of the above, I fitted the VAG220M full lower engine mount from Vibratechnics and felt it made a big difference to the feel of the car, also with minimal vibration increase at standstill, felt nothing once car was warm or on the move.

Thread revival, do you still have these pics mrburdon?  I'd like to get an idea of what's needed to be removed etc. I have noticed some momentary hesitation when asking for full throttle lately and I am considering either the insert or even a complete lower engine mount upgrade like Sparkly used to have.

Some pics would be good see if could do it on drive?

Easy enough to do, just two bolts if I remember correctly. Petrol version takes a week or so to settle in.

Yes easy to do I've done 3 now. 2 on my drive and jays on the ramp. Also there is another thread I put up

Ant, how you finding it now it's settled in and somewhat soften up?

Sorry got no pics. Didn't think it was worth it as it's so easy.

Get the front up on ramp's or jack stands. Undo the bolts that holds the dog bone mount with a normal ratchet and socket. 3 bolts iirc 16 or 18mm iirc. The mount will then slide out with a wiggle of the engine.

Get a hacksaw blade and cut a slot through the edge of the oem plastic bush. You will feel the difference from the blade cutting the plastic bush to it cutting the aluminium of the casting - that's when you stop cutting. It can then be knocked out of the casting by hand. Then orientate the new bush correctly and press it into the casting using a vice.

It's literally a 30 min job with great results.

I can't comment on the vibratechnics full mount and how it feels but I couldn't justify it being 5 times the price of just the bush.

I guess if a garage did it for you then they shouldn't charge more than hours labour.

Actually it's more like 3,3 times (100/30 at Awesome) but anyway, you do get an entire steel arm as well so sounds about right price-wise. But by a quick search I did on how this connection looks like there is probably no stiffness to be gained across the arm (stock one is also a single steel unit no? )  but rather at the two bushings where this connects to. So maybe yes, a bushing upgrade on the stock arm offers all there is to offer there.

Did mine yesterday. Not really a 20min job as I expected. For starters, I un-necessarily removed the bolt the connects the dogbone to the bracket below the engine through the 2nd smaller bush. Obviously not needed as you have to remove the whole dogbone-bracket assembly anyway. I just pried off the old bush with a simple flat screwdriver (much room to play inside the old bush) and even inserted the new one without a vice. Just a lot of grease and working round the bush was enough.

Then pushing the dogbone back in proved much tougher than before, it took a lot of pushing and eventually some hammering to push it fully in place... Don't know if that's normal. To add to that, once the bolt going through the bush was tightened, the holes on the bracket looked to be 5-10mm off! Took some time to figure out the engine had loosened a bit and needed to be slightly pivoted in order for the holes to be aligned with the bracket and secure everything back.

Results? It's minor but there does seem to be less movement during late gear changes and sudden acceleration, although I've only started noticing those after the remap and not when stock. On the other hand, on idle, and especially on D where the revs are ~800rpm there is certainly some vibration felt through the pedals. Push it to Manual where the revs go ~1100 or drive away and the vibration is gone. All in all, I think I like it but maybe it would bother me if I drove around town a lot and spent too much time on idle.
