Dont use Simoniz alloy wheel cleaner

Featured Replies

Just bought some Simoniz alloy wheel cleaner and tried it for the first time.Yep it worked well and cleaned up the alloys ok but i found after driving the car for a couple of days (Octy VRS) the brake dust build up seemed to stain the alloy and was a right bugger to get of.

To prove it was the simoniz cleaner i put the spare alloy on and didnt use the cleaner on it and found the wheel was so much easier to clean and left a smooth alloy finish when cleaned.Yet the wheels i used the cleaner on had a matt finish to them.

Im thinking of sending simoniz an email complaining about this.

Do you think ill get anywhere ?

did you wash the wheels with soapy water after using the cleaner?

to get rid of the stains spray WD40 onto a rag and wipe it on the wheels :)

i never use the cleaners with acid, they will clean the wheels but will eat into the lacquer

Most "Alloy" wheels are painted and laquered just like the rest of the cars bodywork.

You wouldn't put acid cleaner on the bonnet so don't use it on the wheels.

Use normal wash and wax on the wheels and remove any baked on dust with clay bars or a slightly abrasive polish like Autoglym Resin Polish.

Once clean just keep polishing or waxing the wheels every couple of months and wash them with wash and wax or car shampoo at least once a week.

My wheels are heading into their third winter but still look as new. Keep up the polish and brakedust just rinses off.

That is unless you run stupid high metal content brake pads like DS3000's and then you can just live with having your wheels refurbed every six months. :)

Thanks for the replys guys :)

Ill be trying my best to get them back to how they were over the next few days.

I like the tip about WD40 ill try that and a mate of mine suggested using silicone spray after the wheels are cleaned as its easier to clean the wheels next time.

p.s no i wont get any on the brakes lol

WD40 and Silicon spray will both attract dust making the wheels look dirty sooner although it will be easier to get the dust off.

Get some proper polish on them. :D
