Approaching black trim

Featured Replies

Hi all.

What's the best way to attack black trim (rub bars on doors, bumpers etc)?

Mines started to fade a little. I've used back to black before but it only ever lasts a few weeks before it's 'back to grey'. I've heard Peanut butter can work (but again, doesn't last), and also that you can wave a heat gun over it - what type of heat gun? I have one for stripping paint but I suspect that's a little too hot...

Any ideas? What does everyone else use?

Gtecniq do an excellent trim restorer: C4. Not cheap though.

I'm about to try Liquid Elements Trim X which looks good for water beading and colour.

The main thing is what to clean the trim with prior to any restorer or sealant.

Any thoughts?

Many products out there that have a temporary effect

Clean with CarPro Erazer or IPA diluted 50%

As said....GTechniq C4 offers a permamanent solution

As with all products - the key is certainly good preparation of the surface before applying your product of choice.

Dependent on what products may have been applied previously; i would recommend multiple passes

with IPA or other similar product to remove remnants completely.

Once prepared then you can apply your product of choice. Worth while checking the cure time and avoiding water etc.

Most of these products have a maximum durability and are certainly not permanent.

Gtechniq C4 for example is quoted at 2 years best case - on a single application.

No I didn't know it was a typo, especially as you referred to Steve's post saying "I just said that"

I thought as a pro you knew a little trade secret or something about G4, never mind.

Anyway, back on topic, to the OP, Don't use G4 as apparently it was a typo, C4 gets great reviews after a good Google search.

Thank you for the clarification Northern Monkey

Thank you for the clarification Northern Monkey

Not a problem, glad I could clear it up to help the OP.

It was me that started the G4 mistake - don't blame Chris, he was just copying me!

I meant Gtecniq C4 and will correct my post (#2 above).

Thankyou KB

I'll throw another one in the mix as it's easy to apply, Auto Finesse Revive or Krystal Kleen Detail Trim-X

Do you guys think that one 15ml bottle of Gtecniq C4 would do all the exterior plastic trim on a Yeti?

Do you thick that topping it up with something like Liquid Elements Trim-X or Car Pro PERL would be a good idea or of no benefit?

Not so familiar with the Yeti plastic areas; but Gtechniq C4 15ml did my Passat R36 exterior plastic 2 or 3 times over.

On the follow-up question - i would treat them as standalone products; probably best to use one and only one for exterior plastics and not mix.

FYI - I used to use PERL on my Mini Cooper S; but rate Trim-X as far better - but that is just my experience.

Thank you of your thoughts.

I have some Trim-X that I have tried on a small area of trim on my Octavia. Will see how that gets on and then order some C4 for the Yeti.

If you can do a Passat at leas twice, then one bottle should be enough to do a Yeti at least once (and a bit).

GTechniq C4 is a ceramic sealant (A hard shell is produced)..so in theory you can safely use another product over it without compromising its performance

I have a similar product on my wheels

BUT you really wont need to add anything and it should last over 12 months before you redo it..possibly longer

Mate did his daughter's Ford Ka bumpers with it and really rated it

Read here for help in application and reviews

I do car detailing at work and on black trim and bumpers I often use Bees Wax, as it lasts quite a while and is easy to put on

Unfortunately Brad, although it may be an instant solution, it will turn white eventually and make matters worse IMO

I once saw a car with wax applied to the trim..it had gone totally white and ruined it

I asked what he was going to do...He eventually bought new parts

While C4 offers a better solution, getting wax off and 'over polish' at the edges can be a major challenge

I see the three wise (Northern) monkeys have been at work again :)

Edit: Lol...all you need now is one more reply Bryan
