Hot fuses

Featured Replies

Car battery flat,AA man said fuses above battery very hot, probably need to replace lead from alternater to fuse box,

Any advice from you would be appreciated, does this sound right? And if so how would I go about doing it?

Common problem. You need to also the fuse box on top of the battery for melting

common problem as above, also, i had an alternator which had one failed diode in the bridge rectifier, it meant a small continuous drain from the battery through the alternator. The fuses were warm through that occurring.

Yes that is right you have a poor connection due to high resistance probably in the alternator wire. That causes heat build up across the battery fuse box because it can't pass full current load to fuse and instead heats up the wire and nut /crimp holding wire in fuse box. Replace wire /crimp quick as the heat build up and resistance will get worse and ultimately melt you fuse box and could arc to your bonnet.

Many thanks for the advice guys

Much appreciated

Do I need to clean both ends of the wire or just the end attached to the fuse box??

Once this type of corrosion starts, it runs down the cable quite quickly which is why the heating gets worse.

Although you may get away with cutting back the cable and remaking the connection in the short term, the only long term solution is to replace with a new cable having good new connections.

You can not just fix this by cleaning up connection and wires.

Once this issue has come about the crimps and area of wire under crimp are toast. They would have been damaged by the heat build up caused by the resistance across them.

This is why when folks just change the fuse box the issue can come back.

I did a guide on cutting back cable and joining in a cable with good crimp.

Battery issues, Fuse Box melting

Touch wood I have not had any issues in 3 years after. I choose to do it that way but I would recommend a full replacement cable .

Some times the cable can come loose in the crimps and or the nut holding cable in fuse box can come loose this can also be the start of causing resistance build up. So a good thing to do is periodically check connections are tight on main battery terminals and all fuse nuts.[emoji4]
