Making my vRS a little less noisy

Hi, like it says in the title I want to make my vRS a little less noisy.  I'm going to sort the wind whistle from the rear nearside window with the 'hit it gently with a hammer' method.  The other thing I want to do is put some sound deadening over the boot floor,  wheel arches and under the bonnet.  Has anyone done this and can you recommend a good reasonably priced sound deadener ?

There's an OEM under bonnet sound deadening kit available, some cars came with it from the factory and some didn't, think it was a cost cutting exercise sometime during the pre face-lift.

I mentioned about the noise the boot floor makes between the spare wheel well and the back seat if you hit it with your hand, turns out it's already been mentioned a while ago. I think a bit of the tar based anti vibration matting would do wonders there.

Looks like im not the only one with a nearside rear door whistle not sure which bit causes it yet though.

We got one for our 2010 petrol vRS.  There are no issues with overheating and it does make the engine slightly quiter, but the real problem with thse cars is the tyre roar coming through from the back end of the car.  We've put Dynamat in the spare wheel well, the boot floor and under the back seat.  We've also put sound deadening foam under the back seat and under the rubber boot liner.  I think it's made an improvement, but our Yeti deisels are still much quieter cars on the road than our vRS.

It does quieten the engine noise (which some may not like) but it's mainly for heat insulation.

 

I added one when I bought my 118tsi in 2008 as I've had previous cars crack the bonnet paint with heat.  I haven't had any issues with excessive heat in the engine bay because of the insulator.  Generally the ambient temps are a lot hotter in Sydney (beautiful 32c Spring day today - about to go for a swim :sun: ) than the UK so you guys won't have an issue although UK motorway speeds are a lot higher than here.

 

Engine heats up quicker which is helpful for short trip economy.

 

If the OP looks in this forum http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f149/  there are a few threads on sound deadening the rear cargo area & don't forget under the rear seat.  One guy stripped the whole interior & covered everything but it must have added 100kg to the vehicle weight which I think a bit crazy.

 

I did mine with the foam underlay they use under engineered timber flooring.  It's lightweight & thin so I added several layers.  I didn't bother gluing it - just used it as a barrier

So are we saying these are worth the money then?

I like the turbo sound but I also like how silence it can be ;) might have to invest in one ;)

What did you order exactly ? and did you buy some Aerosol Adhesive ?

I was under the impression that any sound deadening had to be a tight flush contacts with the body work so the sound couldn't resonate through the metal

Just my understanding of it

Not sure there's a gen kit from skoda fitted to some models to help with sound deaderning :)

You have to spend some proper money to make much of a difference.

 

I fitted the cheap bitumen sheets in the boot, it made a little difference but not much.

 

A bigger change was switching to quiet tyres like GY Efficient Performance. not worth doing unless you're due to change anyway.

 

If you've 18" alloys you could swap to 17".

It came with GYs on 17'' wheels, I'm not looking for perfect peace.  What would be the point, it's a vRS and makes a great noise when you're having fun.  All I want is to reduce the road noise coming from the boot.   I've had a look and getting the carpet panels off the sides and wheel arches of the boot looks like a bit of a faff !  :|

It's not hard but you have to take a deep breath and attack a few of the panels with brute force.

Another thing that will quiet the rear down is regular (7500km-10,000km) X-rotation of the tyres as the rears tend to get a bit noisy as they wear - they get a raised edge on the trailing part of the tread blocks.

Does anyone have details for the OEM engine sound deadening kit? I had one on the Fabia RS I had and it made a good bit of difference. Was just thinking of the noise the Octy RS puts out when I was in a mates smokey 2010 A4 avant s-line and was amazed how quiet it was compared to my motor!!

Well I can now confirm that the gen skoda kit has been on mine now for a few days (only driven once) and it has helped!

It's loads quiter on tick over and at slow speeds no difference to high speeds as the road noise from tyres is still high :(

Mixed news but at least its a start.  I must have missed it earlier in the thread, but what does the gen kit contain? and do you have a price/part number/supplier?

 

Tempted to try this and also to try some 17s instead of the 18s to try and reduce the tyre noise, but have loads of tread left on the Assy2s and winter tyres.  Bugger.

Just slathering on the bitumen stuff is unlikely to do much, it is designed as a panel damper. It doesn't stop noise transmission. If you look where manufactures put it, that's pretty much where is is most effective. Any more than about 1/3 of the panel and it is wasted.

Beyond this a barrier layer is needed and the specialist stuff is expensive, all that lead loaded, acoustic foam is costly.

A guy I knew worked in this area and he reckoned that carpet underlay was almost as good and much cheaper. He was meaning the stuff made from fabric waste, rather than the rubber stuff. Although that may work. A Specialist carpet layers requisites is likely to have some.

It's like a piece of carpet with a few clips along the edge and fits perfectly to the shape of the under bonnet looks really nice tbh and does work :)

Price was £30 posted from skoda parts and if you do a search for it under bonnet it brings it up I think :)

Isn't there a OEM kit that fits around the engine like the Fabia one does? That one is like a sleeve.
