For anyone still suffering from the wind noise problem

Featured Replies

Hi

I've been experiencing the rear quaterlight wind noise problem on my 06 Octavia since shortly after I bought it in August 07.

It went to the dealer (in northamptonshire) to be looked at along with some other problems and the dealer said they could not find what was causing it (the noise). 6 months later I took it in again and was told that there had been a dodgy repair job in the past and I would have to fork out for a new window seal. I wasn't happy with this as it is a known issue with this model and told them that they should be looking for the updated bulletin from Skoda.

They said that they would do a search for the bulletin and booked the car in again. This time I was told that there was a problem with the piece of glass and that I needed to fork out for a new one £170 odd. "What about the fix from Skoda?" said I. "Oh yes, the technician's had a look at that and doesn't think it is the problem". "What's wrong with the piece of glass in the car at the moment?", "I don't know".

So I left saying that if the issue doesn't get resolved I won't be coming back and spending any more money with them.

Next day I got a phone call from the service manager who says that he is going to gewt my car in for 3 days and have his Master Technician strip it down and get to the bottom of the problem. I have to give them 10 out of 10 for good intentions and effort but maybe 3 or so for competence.

Anyway. The thought of having to get the car in again and getting to work late because of swapping over to the courtesy car spurred me in to action and I decided to give it a go myself.

Having driven up an down the A43 and stopping in every layby to remove and re-apply masking tape to both the inside and outside of the door seal for 2 hours I have managed to nail down exactly where the noise is coming from and how to fix it.

The wind is getting in at the rear corner of the quaterlight in a tiny gap between the seal and the bodywork. I bought a tube of good quality black silicone sealant from B&Q and applied just enough to fill in that gap and bingo! The noise has gone.

All that remains is to see how well the silicone dries with the cold nights we are having at the moment and how well it will stand up to the elements in the long term.

I hope this helps somebody else with a less than impressive dealer and wind!

That's good to know Buddy, I'll bear it in mind for when mine goes.

I had Skoda fix my nearside rerar quarter window under warranty, hopefully the offside won't develop the fault after the warranty runs out in March.

doesn't it just need the window channel adjusting so it fits more tightly against the quarterlight.

:wrthless: any pics?

I believe if you cut a car reg plate to the roughly the size of the channel in the window, wind down the rear window, put the cut reg plate in the channel and tw&t with a hammer it closes up the gap on the quarter light.

I have the same problem at both doors. If i have more the 100km/h i cann't stand in my car ,the noise is so troubling/

I need to see a pic of what u have done plssssssss

Funny this thread shows up, I came back from my hols on Thurs and during the drive back home (I had let my mate use the car while I was away) I noticed the wind noise for the first time! but it's not been since back, I will investigate if this comes back.

I would suggest the 'proper' fix be tried first and then the silicone used if that fails.

I haven't done anything, I don't have the problem, I do recall reading about this before on here, have a search and you may find a thread about it. :)

any chance of a pic with the offending area pointed out please??

Thanks

Will post pics as soon as daylight allow.

Whats the offical method of adjusting the window?

I have this noise on my new car and am keen to get rid of it, I'll try the silicone fix if needed but I'd prefer to 'adjust' the window if possible.

I've had this problem for 3 years now (I came to the forums and had some assistance, but to no avail). It has been back to various dealers 4 times. They say that they don't know what the problem is and will have to start taking panels off, which will be costly - no mention of them meeting costs.

Does anyone know the reference number of the appropriate technical service bulletin issued by Skoda?

I've suffered from a wind noise problem for some time now, but the local Skoda dealer just referred me to my GP

Sorry, but it's been crying out for somebody to say it

Thank you thank you thank you - I have been looking for a cure for my 04 wind noise for the last 6 months - originally it was fixed under warranty but had started up again. Tried this and it cured it - Thank you thank you thank you

Hammers. What would mankind do without them.

Must give this one a go - definitely need some pictures though. My car's been doing this since I bought it and it's literally the only thing that makes it less than a complete pleasure to eat up the miles.

Can you post some pictures so we can see what are you talking about!

please!

I'm not sure I'd be able to hear any wind noise over the general road noise from the wheels/tyres. But I'll have a listen later now you've raised my awareness.

my combi sounds like the window is slightly open, not that bothered at the moment as I just turn the radio up. Will see what its like when I take it up to yorkshire as its mostly sort journeys I'm doing (no more than a 160mile round trip)

Having looked at my car there seems to be a bit of a gap in the window seal just above the bar between the fixed and sliding rear window glass. It's on the sliding window side of the bar though. It's mostly been raining/snowing around here for the past while, so no chance to try the hammering the widow guide back towards the fixed pane of glass to see if that sorts it. The guy in the garage I took it to for a timing belt a moth or so back said there's a danger the door seals themselves are at fault, but he didn't know of the specific issue with Octavias. All I know is that based on the 2010 VRS I test drove a couple of weeks ago didn't have a whisper of wind noise and had much quieter suspension too, so the car definitely can be much quieter...

The Skoda repair instruction was issued in 2004. I think the number is 64B3 or possibly as a full title 64B3066001. It refers to aerodynamic noise in the rear quarters and instructs the use of sealent between the rear quarterlight glass and the rubber window gasket. For those who have used the tape to bridge the glass to trim gap on the rear half of the quarterlight the confirmation of the fault is very clear. I narrowed down my issue (both sides) to about an 8 inch length and, even though there was no obvious gap, when the tape was applied the noise ceased immediately. If you have this problem it will be on the rear half of the quarterlight and not the forward edge.

Any chance of a picture of the quarter light and an arrow drawn on to show exactly where the problem is?

I think I may have a minor version of this problem in my new octavia but would like to know exactly where the problem lies before investigating further.

Thanks.

I'll have a go with sticking a bit of masking tape around the back edge of the rear quarter window and see if the noise disappears over the next day or two and see how that goes :)...
