Wiper Blades

Featured Replies

Been looking at some new wiper blades. I've always been led to believe that for the octy you need the straight drivers side and the 'curved' passenger side (which is what I bought last time).

Does that therefore mean that these retrofit flats won't work or am I missing something? They are the right ones for the model according to the website...

I've got the retrofit flat wipers on my VRS mk1 - those exact Bosch ones too.

The shape of them means they are always in contact with the screen as they try to be curved.

I use standard Bosch wipers with the spoilers on both sides. About £10 a pair and do the job just as well or better than other wipers I've used.

I have just taken off the Bosch Aerotwin from the passenger side as after a month it kept 'catching' on the screen. Very annoying and despite cleaning the blade and glass with Autoglym glass cleaner, and bending the arm slightly, it wouldn't go away. The driver's side has always been ok.

Have replaced with the standard Bosch one from Eurocarparts as a click and collect ( about 1/4 the cost of Halfords) - no noise ... so far ...

VAG aero blades are basically flat and they work a treat.

Yeah, that's what I have now - been using them for years. Just fancy a change I guess and the flats are supposed to be better still as there is constant pressure across the whole length of the blade so for 25 notes I'll give it a go. There's cheaper options on that site that aren't bosch :)

hardcorehobbit - that's reassuring. How have you found them?

Pretty good. I have a few issues with some streaks, but i think that's more the screenwash and the Rain-X not getting on very well.

I'd buy them again. Or at least aero style.

I used the aero blades with the standard hook type arms and always had streaking from the passenger wiper due to the fact it never really sat on the screen properly for the last two inches. I then swapped the wiper arms for the later mk4 pin type arms now the blades sit perfectly on the screen with no streaks. Definitely a recommended upgrade.

Bear in mind how I found them above - maybe I had a duff blade, but now I'm aerotwin driver and std Bosch on passenger!

It made the world's most annoying 'clacking' noise :peek:

Was it the right size?

I had that on my old Peugeot where I was using a blade that was too big. It meant the blade smacked the edge of the windscreen when I was driving above 40 mph.

I tried Goodyear aero style ones but prefer the normal Bosch wipers with spoilers. I've also tried Trico NeoForms. If I was going to upgrade from the normal Bosch ones I'd be looking at the flat blades from a late mk4 Golf/Bora.

Do you use Rain-X (or similar)? That makes a big difference but you ideally need to re-apply it after every time you wash the car.

Right size - I thought it was hitting the edge but it was dragging on the glass at the end of its sweep. Tried Autoglym, Rain-x you name it. Gave up !

Well (contentious?) I got my retro fit aero's today. Despite looking at the Bosch ones I actually ended up with the Valeo items as they were on offer in Halfords. Initial impression is that the work a treat so far, although it must be noted that at rest the last 2 inches or so of the passenger blade is not in contact with the glass. Seems ok on a wipe though but we'll see how they are longer term and in some rain - no snagging or noises yet. Using the Windscreen washer, they are a noticeable improvement on the 'normal' bosch wiper.

I can see quite clearly now though why it is that the Octy uses a flat driver and a 'curved/smiley face' passenger blade in the normal bosch though, as that's clearly what solves the lack of contact on the passenger blade. Might try to bend the blade length into a smiley shape and see if that helps.

I have always bought wipers from the local Skoda garage as they fit the whole screen, no lift at the extremities and no more expensive. The rear screen wiper for the estate can be a problem with after-market types and the Skoda supplied product is the only one I found that actually works over the whole wipe area.

Right. For anyone that runs across this is the future... Get normal Bosch blades, not aeros and 21s/19as size (with the smiley face on the passenger side).

The passenger Valeo aero I got left a huge patch in the middle and missed the far edge of the screen completely. Bending it just made it worse. I swapped it for an equivilant aero Bosch this morning which was no better, so got rid completely and got a new set of normal Bosch blades and perfect once again.

Moral of the story? Get aero arms if you want aero blades. The retro fits just don't...

the hatchback rear blade is a dealer job too - 16in curved blade, impossible to get feckin anywhere, but not a rip off at dealer tbf. I currently have a pair of spoilered standard blades from lidl on the front and they are grand. Starting to wear out, though after 12-15months its to be expected tho...

I have a standard Bosch one on my hatch and it's fine.

Then you got lucky! there was a standard one on mine when i got it, and it missed 40% of the glass...

Hi folks, good grief I remember trying to size wiper blades for my 54 plate Vrs that I bought brand new back in the day.

I'm not sure of the original manufacturer of the blades, (likely Bosch).  All were the standard type however the drivers, (and drivers alone) had a spoiler I recall.

That rear blade is such a pesky size...

21 and 19 are the sizes for blades.
