Fabia Speedometer Issue - expert advice really needed

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone, I'm new here and have been reading up on every post to do with sppedometer issues and really need some advice.

My daughters has a 2001 Fabia 1.9 SDI and its speedometer stopped working.

All other dash functions work fine with no warning lights on the dash.

When the car ignition is turned on the needle drops to the stop pin then raises just a small amount. If the car is driven nothing registers.

I have traced the sensor on the front of the gearbox (thanks to posts here) and it looks solid and fixed correctly. (I am assuming this is the correct sensor)

The grey, three pin connector has been unplugged and cleaned thoroughly.

The loom as it goes from engine bay to dash has be checked for any breaks or water ingression, wrapped back up properly.

The cables have been traced through to the underside of the dash as far as my rather large hands will go and as far as i can see everything look all ok.

So this leaves me at a bit of a loss. Is there any specific tests i can do as i obviously cant test for signal whilst the car is stationary.

is there anything i may be missing here?

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Thanks you in advance

Andy

You need to run the cluster diagnostics from VCDS or a VAS machine at a dealer.

Check the VCDS directory for someone near you with a cable.

A scan of VCDS in module 17, instruments, will bring up if the car itself thinks something is wrong.  :)

chances are it will be a faulty sensor tbh that's assuming the vehicle doesn't have abs!

mine wernt working turned out to be abs sensor

mine wernt working turned out to be asb sensor

Only if it has abs though

Only if it has abs though

They all have ABS don't they? My bog-standard Fabia MPI Classic has it.

I think your right actually. Try and get someone with vcds or a decent diagnostic machine to make sure all your abs sensors are working correctly.

Nope!

My 1.4 8V MPI Fabia Comfort Spec didnt!

IIRC after 2004 it was a stadnard feature, but the ones earlier than that didnt and was optional, hence why my 2001 Comfort didnt have ABS.

I have ongoing issues with my speedo I have just aquired a s/h sensor for £5 from scappy off 1999 A3. Re the VCDs.. I'd bet it shows implasable signal  which is not a great deal of help in pinpointing the actual fault. Another thing to check is to unscrew the gearbox sensor in its complete form (very easy to do) and check the plastic worm drive for wear, the worm profile should be straight up and down like this =  II,  if its contoured like this then = )( the differential is likely to be goosed.  good luck!

Ah I see :)

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I though it would be better than posting a fresh one as my problem is exactly the same. I've got a 52 plate SDI Classic with a dead speedo, my old man is doing the hard work for me as I'm currently on the wrong side of the Atlantic! So far we've swapped both the front ABS sensors down on the hubs, tried a second hand ebay cluster (which wouldn't work without an exit code whatever that is) and we've sent the instrument cluster off to Cartronix to have it repaired; still no joy despite the Cartronix guy saying there was a fault with the cluster which was duly fixed. I was told that the ABS equipped cars use the sensors down at the hubs for calculating the speed, is this true or is there a driven sensor down on the gearbox too? The old man had a look for one but says he can't find it.

Hope that clears it up a bit. You can clearly see the speed sensor G22 and the colour codes and multiplugs to check.

Excellent, thanks for that. I'm going home next week so I can have a good play with the car while I'm there. So my Fabia should definitely have a speed sensor down on the gearbox near the O/S output flange?

Depends what car it is. The vrs uses the abs unit to work the dash and has no speed sensor on the gearbox. you need to read the codes first before anything else and see what's there.

Reading is hard.

Ok, my car has a little magnetic sensor on the gearbox. They're bloody expensive for what they are so I'm getting mine from the States, at $15 posted I'll take a punt on it!

Just to update, I pulled the original speed sensor out of the gearbox and wiped off the metal filings which had accumulated on the end of the probe, this made no difference immediately but a day or so later the speedo started jumping all over the place. It eventually settled down and the speedo started working almost perfectly apart from a few 'blips'. It eventually stopped working completely again. Anyways, I just got word that the old man had received the new sensor and fitted it and it hasn't worked, so all of the sensors have been replaced, and the speedo cluster supposedly refurbished....any other ideas? Clutching at straws but I'm thinking maybe wiring?

Wiring or gearbox.

Zider recently found a wiring problem between the sensor and cluster on his car. Two of the three wires are dead easy to check, as described in that thread.
