Front Fog lights: Legality

Featured Replies

If I remember right,

Rear fogs are compulsory,

Front fogs are not.

If the car has front fogs:

1. Does it have to comply with the same legal requirements as the rear?

- such as MOT and must switch on in low visability?

2. Some imports such as Japanese/US imports have amber/yellow fogs,

- are these colour legal in this country?

I dont think they test front fogs on the mot because not all cars have them. Just like rear wipers

The Jag XF dosen't have front fogs  . One rear fog

Just did a google,

Apparently Police can still stop u if u have faulty front fogs.

Sounds fair, but still unsure about YELLOW front fogs are legal.

Apparently yellow front fogs are more effective than WHITE front fogs?

What's the issue for you on this? Do you want yellow fogs on your car? personally I think yellow fogs don't look very nice but I guess it's down to personal taste!

Yellow Fogs are legal Wayne

Yes ...They are more effective in Fog

Yup!

Its for my 25year old classic :-)

On a different note if i replaced my fogs with fabia drls would i be able to use them just as drl lights or would they be required to work as fogs as well.

Front fogs aren't part of the MOT so if you swap out the incandescent front fogs and replace with Octavia Scout LED DRL's you'll be OK.

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236). Law RVLR regs 25 & 27

Its the switching the lights on that people seem to have trouble with.

Then if they do switch fogs on, they never seem to turn the bloody things off again.

Rant over :) haha.

You can have yellow or white front fogs and headlights if you wish, the law in them actually working is if they are fitted, the must work or the plod and prosecute (if any actually would is another matter but if it's your unlucky day and have a keen probationer pull you over, it could happen).

I have yellow fogs on my mazda, I also tried fitting yellow full beam but didn't like it so removed them in favour of white.

AS I said yesterday, I would get the Garage to investigate why they dont work Wayne

It could be blown bulbs, fuse, switch............

If they are fitted, they MUST work...as far as I know

My sisters partners Renault Laguna  has two completely smashed front foglights, its been through two MOT tests now and passed both, each time its had an advisory but no more. The front fog lights are not a testable item. They have the replacement light units, but to replace them is a time consuming bumper off job.

I'm surprised. I'd have thought they'd be like ABS. You don't have to have ABS but if you do it must work.

I too, would have thought that they have to work, if fitted

Will i have to have them coded with vcds and would they work when engine started as drls. Also do not fabia drl lights fit?

It is possible on most MkII Octavia's to set the front fog lights to operate as DRL's. You can even reduce their intensity / brightness to avoid dazzling other drivers.

The Fabia vRS LED DRL's are the same as the one's fitted to some MkII Octavia Scouts (LED DRL's in lieu of front fogs was a factory cost option), however I believe the fitments used to attach them to the bumper are slightly different (not 100% confirmed).

If you set the front fogs to operate as DRL's and fit the LED DRL's then they'll still work as front foglights when the switch to turn them on is selected.

You will need to fit a resisitor to each LED DRL to avoid the blown-bulb warning on the dash. These can be bought off the shelf with the correct plugs on either end to allow for 'plug & play'.

My local MOT station asks me to sit in the car to operate all the lights etc. whilst the tester checks them.

I have never been asked to turn on the front fogs, even though they work fine.

(I appreciate you have to turn them on before you can turn the rear fogs on but the tester is at the back of the car checking the rear lights).
