12,000 miles and oil top up

Featured Replies

Never had to top up oil in any of my previous company cars in the last 7 years but on Friday I had a low oil warning come on after 12wks and 12000 miles. I know new cars burn oil but I would have thought it would have lasted until the first service???

DM Keith weren't very helpful and said they were too busy to do it and I wasn't allowed to drive. Thankful my company car company said I could do it as I was 100 miles from home. Got oil on my suit though!!

Is it a Diesel?

If you do quite a bit of M Way driving it's more likely to need some oil.

I have run two Tdi Golfs from new up and down the M1 to Yorkshire and both needed top ups between changes, when it happened on my first one, VAG said it's not uncommon and nothing to worry about providing the oil consumption doesn't become excessive.

Yep, VRS diesel.

Wasn't too bothered but I thought given they'd sold a £24k car 12 weeks ago that they'd put £7 of oil in for me!!

Mine came with a full bottle as did both my Golfs.

Cheapskates...

If you know knew cars can use oil,

and read the Owners manual that tells you that new engines can use oil,

it is a good idea to check the oil.

But the warning light / message worked thankfully & let you know.

At least check the oil when collecting a new car to see if the correct level is there after the PDI.

it is not always.

As the tyre pressures might not be correct.

1000 miles a week certainly has the engine run in and now it is hopefully going to use next to none or no oil.

No idea why they said you are not allowed to drive. It was a Warning Light / Message, not a do not continue Message.

As the owners manual tells you, top up.

(do not over fill.)

If you want buy the 'Correct grade of Oil' at a filling station at the inflated price,

get the receipt and ask the Dealer to Refund you since the

Complementary 1 Litre was not in the Boot.

My dealer just says to call in if I want it checking or topping up,it's free. usually get a call after 6 months with an invite for a check over. Seems like a dealer with customer issues.

You have a good one, my Yeti used to get about the same before a small top up was needed, the PD Passat I had needed topping up at 7,000 miles and the Fabia 2 VRS that needed a litre every thousand miles!

Quite normal, nothing to worry about either.  When you get your car serviced dip the oil before you leave the dealership, most VAG (I know because I have had Audi, VW and Skoda) will only top up to just above the minimum mark on the dipstick after a service, I have always gone back in and asked for the extra 3/4 litre they forgot to pour in and they do it.

From when I used to replace my own oil & filter. You need to remember the new filter is empty. So it needs a quick turn over the to fill this, then a check. They probably just put a measured amount in, not allowing for this. A dipstick check could add 5 seconds to the job.

I know of a Focus ST, who's supplying dealer is incapable of knowing the difference between this and a standard Focus.Three times following a service it had to go back due to tyre indicator fault. They put wrong pressures in. When asked if it was an ST service they had carried out, they weren't sure and couldnt say which oil was put in, so "say" they re did that also. Unfortunatly you have to have faith in dealers and those doing the job.

I got the warning light after 10-11k miles. I continued to drive; I bought and filled 1L oil at the service station next time I had to refuel.

According to the manual you can temporarily get rid of the warning light by opening the hood for at least x seconds.

Is all OK now,

Oil topped up and raring to go?

IIRC, the owners manual says to check the oil level every 500km (basically at every fuel fill). While I think this is excessive as a regular exercise it's not a bad idea when you first get a vehicle to get an idea how much it likes a drink and then adjust the checks to suit (I check mine every 2 months)

If you've managed 12,000km before the light comes on then it wouldn't be unreasonable to check the level every 5,000km - especially when VW say that 0.5L/1000km is acceptable consumption (which i don't think it is). Based on your expectations of not having to add oil between services and the engine needing a minimum of 3L to operate without damage with a variable service interval of 15,000 miles it would need a sump capacity of ~15L if using oil at VWs maximum allowable rate.

Did you actually check the dipstick to see what dipstick level correlates with a warning light? If there's still oil showing on the stick then there's no reason you couldn't drive to the dealership for a free top-up.

It was 19,000 km that were covered.

the owners manuals can say,

'May use as much as 0.5 litre in 1000 km' (621 miles)

Is a figure VWG give in Owners Manuals for engines that are , 3 or 4 or 6 cylinder. petrol or diesel and from 44 Kw up.

It is a nonsense amount that Dealerships & VWG  Customer Service Employees often use, even with engines that clearly are faulty

like some of the 1.4 TSI 132-136 Kw Twinchargers.

No idea why any driver would expect a dealership to do the Topping up for them, its hardly anything to do with them.

Just about every driver expects to buy fuel, and they buy oil as and when needed, it is just part and parcel of running a vehicle.
