Quaife Atb Limited slip differntial

Featured Replies

Has any one fitted a Quaife Atb LSD to an Octy 3?  In theory an LSD should be a significant performance upgrade and tbh, the tsi vrs struggles to use its power on anything other than dry and clean surfaces.  I imagine anyone that has a tuning box or remap would really benefit from an LSD. I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of anyone that has looked into LSD fitting or actually side it.

+1 for this. Be great to hear from someone who's added a LSD.

As far as I can make out the vRS has the poor man's version of an LSD with the so-called XDS. According to the Autocar review:

"Underneath, as expected, it gets much the same running gear as the regular Golf GTI. Shorter sports springs leave it 15mm lower than standard; the anti-roll bars have been beefed up and more negative camber applied, but the track remains the same as a standard Octavia, and there’s no funky e-diff upfront - just the updated software-based XDS+ system which brakes both inside wheels during courageous cornering."

So not in the same league as you're musing about, but of some value nevertheless. Not sure about other Octy versions either.

Yes think so, my understanding is xds uses the abs sensors to sense a spinning wheel and uses the brakes to stop/ slow the spin and push torque over to the wheel with grip. In theory that sounds fine, in practice.... Damp or dirty roads and hard acceleration make wheel spin happen even in a straight line and up at 40 or 50. I guess the sensors ability to distinguish a spin is not super acute.

I like what I read about the Quaife design, no clutches, gradual torque transfer, no torque steer, lifetime warranty, fit and forget.  Tbh I'm largely just musing and I doubt I'd fit an upgrade/mod but if I did them the Quaife LSD would presumably be easier than fitting a haldex? Cheaper? And although it can't transfer quite as much torque I think it can do about 70% which is more than clutch designs and I'd guess plenty to make significant performance changes.... But I am merely guessing / musing.

I do know, if I ever remap, I'll be looking to fit an LSD.... Using the stock oomph can be hard sometimes!

Actually....I'm not sure if the xds does what I said... Or if it just does the 'brakes the inside wheel if you corner hot'.  Does the vrs have edl as well?  Think edl is what I described above.... But don't quote me.

My Google fu is stronger on the PC than the smart phone... Just found a few helpful discussions by asking about Quaife vs torsen and asking about golf gti and r mk 7.  Seems the Quaife is good for cornering but does little for the traffic light drag race. However, edl and Quaife work well, and do aid in the TL drag race.

Is it the 02Q gearbox in the manual vrs?  If so then I need to save £660  for the right Quaife.

The Fabia 2 vRS has the XDS system.  I've fiddled with it for one regular member on here - on track it's better to have the XDS off as it really interferes and cooks brakes etc.  On the road though he says the XDS is awesome.  I must have turned it on and off a few times now - For castle combe action days, Bedford how fast, the Nurburgring, etc etc :D

You can switch the ESC and something else off in the Octy with a short or long press of a button.  Being just an ordinary driver (can I still show my face here after admitting that ;-) ) I leave all ditch and hedge avoidance aids on at all times. Tbh, ESC,edl, xds, xds+ and any other TLAs the vrs have I find a bit confusing. I do understand abs but not sure on the others....I know they sometimes make pretty lights flash on my dash but other than that I don't notice them.  As I said though, I'm not a good driver so maybe I haven't learnt to notice them yet.

I can see what you're saying... But can it over heat the massive Octy vrs brakes? They are impressive.
