Clutch soft and low biting point

Featured Replies

Hi there!

Hope someone can shed some light on my issue. I own a Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI PD 2005. Not sure if I have a hydraulic clutch or not but it seems I do as I have noticed I have a plastic clutch pedal not too sure if this is an indication so I'm simply assuming I do have a hydraulic clutch.

This morning whilst driving to a footy game with my lad I have noticed considerably that my pedal went soft whilst shifting through gears. I stopped pumped it up a bit but haven't really noticed any change. Also at the same time the clutch biting point shifted further and is now probably about an inch or two off the floor. I do not have any gear changes issues they shift as normal.

The clutch is not slipping as I have the pedal fully pressed down, I have heard and read on here is could be the brake fluid and bleeding needs to be carried out. Do the brakes need bleeding here or is there a different bleed point near the clutch hydraulic system? I have also heard it could be master cylinder where the brake fluid reservoir is, have looked for leaks but didn't find anything to be honest.

Your help is appreciated as always.

The clutch is hydraulically operated as you figured, sharing the fluid with the brake system.

You may need to bleed the clutch, it's probably not something most services bother with.

If it's similar to the 1.9PD you'll need to disconnect the airbox mountings and an electrical connector (MAF?) and bend it behind the bonnet stay to keep it out of the way.

The bleed nipple should be easily identifiably on top of the clutch housing.

I'd recommend you use an EEZI-BLEED to do the job, I initially used a one way bleeding valve and pumped the pedal but ended up with a flipflop pedal... useless.

My 06 clutch fluid looked like yellow milk.

Of course it may be a worn master/slave seal but bleeding the fluid would be my first step to rectify the snag.
