Would These Speakers be ok

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

I had enough of my leaky doors and bouncy locks so if I'm going to be changing everything i may as well change the crap, distorted and crackly speakers at the same time so i won't have to touch the doors ever again :dull: .

I don't have my music up loud at all, don't listen to dance music either, i just need something thats a bit of an all rounder.  There will be no amp and at present i will be using the standard symphony stereo until i get something more decent (after my Alpine IDA x305s got liberated by some little bugger)

I'm looking at these...whats everyone opinions

and using these as the adaptors...

Thanks

I personally would steer clear of edge not the best quality unless you are seriously on a budget. You'll be better off with these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rainbow-SL165-6-5-or-16cm-2-way-speakers-not-focal-genesis-morel-hertz-/301381794546?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item462bc13af2

Or these if your budget can stretch http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Focal-PS165-Component-Car-Speakers-6-5-/131339738451?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item1e94755d53 , all you'll need is some 6.5" mdf rings to fit them to your doors.

Buy right buy once.

Normally I would steer clear of co-axial but talkaudio reviewed those Rainbow speakers quite highly. As the OP wouldn't want it too loud or bouncy (paraphrasing...) they could be just the ticket.

Though I think those Focals would be too deep. I have found one reference to similar products online regarding the mounting depth. That was 66mm+. My own speaker sit on the window bar and disturb the door card and they're 60-61mm.

Ha, those Rainbows look to be right on the depth limit too... :)

I don't want to spend more than £70 for speakers when i wont use them to their full potential.  Alpine SPG 17cs seem to be ok and I found them for £70.  Would the speaker adaptors i've linked above still be ok.

Anything with a proper crossover needs more power to get them working properly. Effectively the x-over (passive at least) loses an order of magnitude of the sound (-3DB)

You wha?? Haha i have no idea what any of that means.

Given my requirements then do you think i need component speaks.

Thanks

I have Morel Tempo 6's which have a mounting depth of 62mm I just managed to get them in, the magnet is up against the window regulator bar and the door card sits proud ever so slightly! I don't think you will be able to go deeper than that without cutting the door card.

You don't have to go component it's just that generally components will sound better than co axials due to the mounting position of the tweeter. I had some Hertz co axial in before and I didn't like them they sounded strange.

When you say don't fit what do you mean by that?

Just to add these are the ones that I used x2 on each door. http://www.amazon.co.uk/MOUNTING-STEREO-SPEAKER-SPACER-ADAPTOR/dp/B007K7O3KO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424286219&sr=8-1&keywords=PAIR+OF+6.5%22+18MM+ROUND+OVAL+MDF+MOUNTING+STEREO+SPEAKER+SPACER+ADAPTOR+RING

As you can see from the pics, they do fit.

Sorry i was rushing when i wrote that.  The MDF one's i had were too shallow and the back of the speaker was hitting the window rail.  I went to Halfords quickly and picked up the golf ones that see to fit ok, i think the face of them may be slightly too big though but the drives side is in.

The face will be slighty to big the MDF rings that i fitted was.

What I did was I took one and positioned it as best as I could, I then pilot drilled and screwed it to the metal door panel so it was fixed nice and strong, which still left gaps between the spacer and the door panel. I sealed the gaps with some stuff I had lying around to create an air tight seal between the spacer and the door panel.

Then I took the second MDF ring and rotated so that I could screw that one to the other one without the screws hitting the other screws, I then sealed the two MDF rings and screwed the speaker to the second ring. Hope that makes sense although if you've already sorted it then it dosen't matter.

I spaced the speaker out a total of 36mm to mount a speaker that is 62mm in depth. I only just managed to get enough clearence from the window regulator bar to enable me to fit the door card back on.

Hope you've been able to sort it bud it does fit and you shouldn't have too many probles aslong as your speaker is not any deeper than mine.

Would it be possible to mount decent speakers in the rear doors ?

Anything is possible but you will have to cut the metal panel and also the door card.

It's not worth doing imo, spend your money and time improving the fronts.

Thats where the problem was with my speakers.  The MDF rings i bought are 30mm and my speakers are 61mm deep.

These are the ones i used in the end, had to rush to my local Halfords and get a pair  http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audio/car-audio/sound-system-accessories/autoleads-speaker-adaptors-for-vw-golf-sak3101#tab1

Your welcome.

It may be worth you taking a look over on the Talk Audio Forum, lots of information from people who have a far greater understanding than you and me. I spent a long time sifting through post's and comments before I brought my setup.

Glad it's all sorted now bud. When I installed my speakers it just happened that I brought the correct one's, as I said they only just fitted.

Well their not 100% perfect, their out by literally 5mm too big. One thing i dis notice today though while taking the speaker out is that the magnet in the back was wet from the rain yesterday dripping in thru the door and down the runners. I dont want my new speakers getting f**ked up because of god damn rain.

Cover it with some CCF (Closed Cell Foam) that will keep it water proof and you can also use it as a decoupler to help stop panels vibrating e.g. your door cards. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silent-Coat-Noise-Isolator-4/dp/B004WCUCIC/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1424459481&sr=8-8&keywords=silent+coat

Haha i was just considering getting some normal fluffy sound proofing from a car wrapping it around the magnet and covering it in gaffer haha.
