Specific Octavia 1 RS (or non) boot size question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My first post here as I'm considering swapping from a mondeo estate to the Octavia 1 RS estate, as 22mpg in the ST is starting to wear a little thin!!  I need an estate for work, and specifically need to fit a 5 foot bar in the boot (with the seats up).  Has anyone got an estate and a tape measure, and fancy seeing if it would fit - diagonally is fine but really need to sit flat in the boot? Thanks!

Also, the only reason for the swap is economy.  I average 25mpg in the ST, so if I can average a book 35mpg from the Skoda then it's worth swapping.  If realistically I'll be seeing high 20s, or very low 30s then I might as well keep the ST.  Anyone care to comment?

Thanks all.

Chris

ETA - I've found one I like the look of, but it's over an hours drive so wanted to check these before I made the trip over!

What's your commute like?  It's looking promising though.

Are the seats in these comfy things for long trips?

Yea nit bad but i upgraded to golf gti recaros which way more co fortable and hug you, yiu can pick these up used.

I drive 40 mile to work and back, i had a remap done which improved fuel econony also.

Its a far more echonomical engine than the mondy st mate and much tuning potential

I can measure later when I get home from work. I've had 40mpg on a run, average was usually low 30s but it drinks a little more since fitting a hybrid turbo and bigger injectors :D

You want to fit a 5ft bar in the boot with both rear seats up?

Not a chance even diagonally.

Just to put your mind at rest, I'm a painter and decorator and I get all my gear in just fine, and ladders go on the roof rack! Got a good set of front seat covers and a genuine octavia boot Matt protector and there's pretty much nothing these estates can't cope with!

If I recall, the boot is about 1m square, so diagonal will be about 1.4m = 4ft 6 ish. But will measure later.

Ha so its looking uncertain. If it's a few inches off then I could prop on side up slightly.

Thanks for taking the time to measure!

id say it should fit diagonally. I had a track gauge in mine the other day, which is just over 6ft long tip to tip, and i was only caught for a couple of inches on not having to drop the seat. Mines a hatch rather estate, but other than height the boot floors the same?

From the back of the seat in one corner to the back corner of the boot is 1470mm.

If you put it on top of the wheel arch at the front of the boot and across to the bottom at the back you can get about 1510mm in.

Well the bar measures 1520mm tip to tip, so it's looking like it's not going to fit.  It's not something I can strap to the roof bars, it's a weightlifting bar and needs to be dry when I get to clients and it will rust if it's open to the elements.

Argh it's so close, it's frustrating!  If I start propping it up in the boot, I'm only going to end up doing damage to the boot lining which I don't want to do.  Stil it so nearly fits and the car fits all my other requirement I'm still tempted to make the trip and have a look. Hmmm.

Thanks for measuring your boot pal!

Its that close to fitting, and it looks a very tidy, unmolested and loved example of the car, id make the trip and bring the bar with with you. never know. might see a way getting it in once your standing there...

Could ya trim 5mm off each end of the bar??? :p

Ha - trimming the bar isn't really an option!

I think I might make the trip because as you say, it does look lovely and I will take the bar to see what I can do.  Do you think it's well priced? I'd probably be looking to pay more like £2,300-£2,400 for it I think.

I'm also thinking it might feel a bit of step down in terms of quality, finish and finesse compared to the ST - although that does have a lot of trim rattle anwyay!  Despite this, I don't think I'm concerned although I might feel differently once I'm in it.

Are the beige carpets difficult to keep clean? I have a dog so muddy boots etc may well cause issue!

yeah, carpets are difficult, but a black carpet from a mk4 golf, or standard octy, will fit straight in, just whip seats out to fit.

The only issues I spotted from the pictures are that the pedals appear to have been replaced (should have silver pedals with black rubber bits on) and that the driver's seat bolster looks like it has been squashed (seems to be common on these cars).

Went to check it out today.  I wasn't sold.  The bar will just fit in, but you have to prob it up in the boot cover slot, across to the back to get it in. Apart from that it just felt too much of a step down from the mondeo.   I know it was skoda's first go at a decent car, but the interior feels 10 years older than the mondy, not 1 year older.  It drove nicely, and felt quick enough, but I only saw 23mpg on my test drive which admittadly wasn't representitive, but I couldn't see myself getting more than 30mpg on my commute, which isn't enough to sacrifice the nicisties of the mondy.  It also sounds like a diesel on start up, and I would miss the v6 growl too much.

I know it's not the place to come and say this, being the owner forum, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.  I think I'd have to get a newer one but can't stretch to one atm!

Fair enough! :)

I dont think we(most of us...) will take offence, not everyone likes every car, tbf some people must like Peugeots or they'd be gone belly up long ago :D

and at least you went and looked and now know that one doesnt suit. who knows, you might happen across A N Other someday that does take your fancy.

either way, im sure the midnight mod above wont deactivate your account over that post :D
