Poor MPG after timing belt change.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a 2003 1.9t tdi  AVF engine 6 speed manual.

Just had the timing belt replaced, all genuine parts etc etc. now the MPG is down other symptoms are:

  • takes another crank to start
  • diesel rattle from pump for first couple of seconds when started
  • dirty diesel smell from exhaust
  • slow throttle response

and worse MPG.

Anything else i should be looking for?

help please... Someone mentioned checking the timing via vagcom, i don't have it or the locking tools? Anyone near me in Wiltshire that knows what their doing that wouldn't mind helping?

You're on the right lines. The fuel timing needs reset after the belt change, at which point the car should become brighter and more economical than it was before the belt change.

How do I do this?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm with Ken and that the fuel pump timings your most likely suspect.  You'll need VAG Com.

Take it back to whoever did it, tell them the symptoms and ask them to re-check the fuel pump timing.

There is no engine driven fuel pump on the AVF engine - it's a PD.

"Mark and pray" cambelt changes will produce this result. The correct crank and cam locking tools must be used in order to preserve camshaft timing. It's also essential to fully understand the principle of tensioning the belt with the 3 camwheel to hub bolts slackened - locked-in torque is prevented by this.

With the correct tools and procedure, the timing (KW = kurbel winkel) or crank angle, will be almost spot on, and can be checked with VAGCOM or similar.

I have changed many of these belts, and every one has been within the permitted KW tolerance by using the VAG lock tools and observing the correct procedure.

These engines are not for monkeys to work on.

Hi,

thanks for the replies, the cambelt was changed by a VAG specialit whom i trust i have used him for years. I am just thinking its very slightly out and cam be timed back in anyone local willing to help? I had a oil change, however, didnt get teh fuel filterr done, or the air filter and i am thinking it could be the fuel filter too? Was going to do myself?

could the fuel filter cause these issues too. when its cold and only cold, pulling away in 1st only it will judder at low RPM ? the mpgs have got worse over the last couple of months but seem a little worse again after the cambelt?

If the job was done by a specialist, the timing can be checked without opening the bonnet. Simply get him to measure KW at the diagnostic socket and check that it is within tolerance,

If he can't check KW, he's not a specialist. All of your symptoms suggest mis-timing - it can't be coincidence that this problem follows a belt change.

Cool okay I will get it checked. Thanks for the advice, I would hope he is a specialist as he worked as a vw engineer for 15 years before opening his own a garage.

Thanks rotodiesel

  • 3 months later...

I've got same issue after doing cam belt, can crank angle be checked with my friends Snap-on Solus Pro tool, or is it only VAGCOM. We used correct tool to lock crank and pin in adjustable cam pully.
