So with the extra money you will have to pay to drive in the city and people complaining about how dirty the fumes are, how long do you think diesels have left?

For HGV+PSV s donkeys years and they are the main culprits.

Diesel Vehicles will be going long after Boris Johnson has been found out and is no longer in politics.

 

The Chinese have lots invested in Heavy Oil Refining,

and in the Slick that is Boris.  One has long term value and the other is just being used temporarily.

In Cite Europe yesterday in France & saw that Petrol ( not the 98 ron version) was approx £1.40 per litre, but Diesel was approx 99p.

Is anybody getting rid of their diesel? Ir do you think its worth keeping?

Surely you only get rid of, 

If it is costing you too much, 

because of Congestion Charges where you live or have to drive possibly.

 

Or its Maintenance costs too much,

or it is unsuitable for your use, eg it has too many Regenerations or clogs the DPF etc.

 

Horses for courses.

Not everyone visits cities or does short journeys.  & not all Diesels are polluters,

and not all are economical. Not all are noisy or slow.

 

I do wish that Diesel MINIS did not sound so bad though.

& people would not sit Square Wheels with Diesels running.

This is all true, i just wanted to know people's opinions on the matter, i dont go to cities at all tbh and i find my car fabia is ideal for my commute.

Thats true, i dont think i would have a massive issue with one though. 20 miles each way to work including a fun up hill climb section.

I changed back to petrol last year, after 9 years of driving diesel cars(2 furbies and a Cee apostrophe D)....

I did the opposite and got a derv after 7 yr. Basically if you want to know the right thing to do, watch me and do the opposite.

Mine is the first one I've owned.... ever. SWMBO is on her 2nd oiler but it'll be petrol for her next time I think

Looking at petrol next time. I've done 47000 miles in 4 years. I think I maybe on the edge of where DERV is cost effective or not. I like the low down torque of diesel.

They are targeting pre euro 6 cars.

So even if you have a dpf you'll get penalised if it isnt a pretty new model

No congestion charges in dumfries and galloway. I'll just keep filling the fresh country air in particulated soot in my non dpf soot chucker :)

my exhaust is lovely and clean thanks and the BL won't ever go inside the m25 while I have it, though for the right deal I could be persuaded to have a mk3 tsi vRS.....maybe.

Do you think that the German Government that managed to get the other Governments to put back the Emissions changes in 2020 

were just helping out their car industry, because they have new technology, but not quite ready !!

Diesel still and in the future...for sure...couse I running high milleage per year... In past had an petrol Ford and retrofit a LPG inside (natural gas), and drove it like that for 5-6 years. Before LPG retrofit drove it just on petrol...stupid choice...for the price of fuel (petrol) that I have spend...I could buy a brand new car back then. After Ford (cause young brother 'needed' a car) biught brand new Octy MK1 (MY2009), petrol, and retrofit from first day a LPG at local dealer. With that car in 2 years of driving had only too manny problems bacause if LPG inside, on petrol went smooth but after a while too manny problems. Lucky for me under warranty period. Funny, running a Ford on LPG (or LNG...) not even a single one error or problem in 6 years of driving it. But I decided to make progress forward and replace a Octy MK1 with a Octy MK2 vRS TDI and I was ..."reborn"...tbh. In 4.5 years of driving it just pure pleasure, , and with DPF no problem with polution, I love it. This year we change wife car, petrol, and switch to diesel, again Skoda with DPF (SuperB).

We do make a high milleage and diesel is logic choice. Maintenance for diesel car is not a issue at all, we will drove them as a "long term" familly cars...both of them. Diesel as a fuel...for sure...is not "under question" still...and will not be so fast. Too manny factors are relevant, if you look and understand global economy and position.

I've bought my first petrol after only owning diesels (mk 1 Octavia 1.9 TDI 90, mk 2 Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI 150 and mk 2 Octavia VRS 2.0 TDI 170), the Seat was the high point as it was fun to drive yet tax was low, the fuel efficiency was good and never had any issues with the engine, I've seen comments about chocolate camshafts on these engines but wasn't an issue for me.  Comparatively the Octavia VRS was the low point, its performance was inconsistent (I assume due to the DPF), the fuel efficiency wasn't that great and I had various issues with the engine which all seem entirely typical, if anything mine wasn't as bad as others.   I know the newer CR170 engines are better but they still have the additional complexity of the various parts now needed to meet the various regulations so as I don't do many miles, I've gone for a petrol as I'm not getting the benefit of the fuel efficiency and although I preferred the feel of a diesel car it's good to have a car without a turbo, DMF, DPF, EGR etc.

 

That said I don't blame VW, I think the increasingly tough emissions regulations are forcing diesels to be overly complex while petrols can be comparatively simple although that may change as it has for diesels with newer emissions regualations.

Are you trying to pollute the earth? Diesels= less fuel being burnt= less pollution. Certainly the case now no particulates to worry about.

I've ditched diesel. I don't want any part of the issues you get with them with all the eco gubbins stuck to them now (though admittedly, I didn't actually have any of those problems myself). Its also nice to have a car that gets warm quickly now. I also like not having DPF anxiety whenever I'm stuck in traffic.
