EGR valve removel

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

I have  removed the EGR valve gas transfer pipe and fitted a plate on the exaust conection and also fitted plate the conection to the EGR valve the car started ran for about mile or so then engine management light come on and will not stay off.

My question is does the ecu have to be told the egr valve is no longer present.

Next question am i right in thinking  that yellow light as in engine management light is warning light telling me to get it checked.and is safe to drive till computor check

my car is tdi 90bhp 2004 i think eng code is ALH

Thanks in advance for any help offered

thanks dirk

I hav been running with egr blockoff plate on my 1.9 ALH and CEL on for 50000km :-)

Newer engined cars need to be told it has been blanked off, where as us with older vehicles get away without anything other than physical changes.

HI folks

Problem solved It would seem that many  cars you can delete EGR vavle and thats it job done.

On my Skoda 90 TDI code ALH you do have to turn off on the Ecu  ( as  Member Mbames says above) I had actually done this before i read above responce thanks for your help

In my case I suspect i had not made a very good job of sealing  the vacume pipe that operated the EGR and so the ECU sensed low Vacume and put the engine management light on

So thats it  job done

I hope this helps some one

Dirk

The EGR system is there to serve a purpose, and that is to re-introduce a controlled amount of exhaust gas to reduce combustion temperature by consuming oxygen and consequently NOx emissions. The ECM monitors airflow via the MAF sensor, and is the only path by which the engine can draw air when the EGR valve is closed. When the ECM commands the EGR to open the ECM will see a reduction in mass air flow due to the alternative port through which exhaust gas is drawn. The ECM uses this MAF reduction to verify that the EGR has actually opened when it's told it to. If no airflow reduction is detected due to it being blanked off then the ECM will reduce engine power so that NOx emission levels are maintained. If you want to blank the EGR you will need to adapt or reprogram the ECM so that it expects a greater volume of air before it opens the EGR. This will have the effect of opening the EGR less or even not at all. This adaption can be done using VCDS on some engines but not all.

The engine will run better without the EGR system, and the intake manifold will not clog up. At present only smoke density is checked at MOT, not individual pollutants within the exhaust smoke.

HI folks

I reported above as fixed but motors being motors It has proved me wrong again and the eng management light is back on again, looks like i have more learning to do any one out there got the answer.

My mate put the car on  his computor as you would expect it reported low presure on egr valve he switched it off it stayed of for about 30 miles and is now back on again my car is  skoda Octavia  2004 1.9 TDI ALH engine

Thanks in advance for any help offered

Find someone near you with VCDS. In the engine controller go to Adaptions. From the best of my memory select channel 3 and the default value will probably be 32768. The mass air flow in mg/str will be displayed. Increase the value as far as it will go which I think is 33768. The mass air flow will now also have increased. The EGR valve will now be commanded to open less than it was before.

This information is given from the best of my recollection and total accuracy cannot be guaranteed. The best thing to do is to take notes as you go so you can always change everything back to where you were.
