Elbow Lever Removal

Featured Replies

Hi

I am having to replace door locks (both rear doors) on a 2007 Classic.  I have finally managed to get the lock off the RHS door but (stupidly) managed to break the plastic elbow lever (I think that's what it's called) that connects the rod coming vertically down from the lock button to the rod that goes horizontally to the door lock (thus converting the vertical movement into a horizontal one).

I am going to see if I can source a replacement for it but I cannot figure out how to remove this little assembly (without causing any further damage ).

Does anyone know how to remove the thing? I believe it may be fixed using a part called a straddle pin but I dunno how to get one of them out either. :S

Pictures would be handy and greatly appreciated; I would have posted one myself of the problem but I'm too much of a newbie to be allowed to upload any pics. :'(

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Thank you very much for the suggestion, unfortunately, I have already been there (that's where I got the names that I've used for the parts I'm having bother with) but it doesn't go into any detail about how to actually remove this component.  It's fixed by a method I've never seen before and which may possibly even be a 'permanent' fixing with no way of removal/replacement.  It seems I'm unable to paste any pictures into a message either (I tried but te message couldn't be posted with the image in it) so I've put a pic of this "Elbow Lever" component onto my website and hopefully the link can be posted in the message: http://users3.jabry.com/Highlander/Elbow_Lever.jpg.  The green arrow shows the location hole where the vertical rod (from the lock button) connects to it.  The red arrow points to the corresponding location that the horizontal rod (going off to the door lock itself) should connect but I've broken off the little plastic annulus the rod fits into.  The blue arrow indicates this 'straddle pin' (I think) and the black wheel around which the lever rotates.  I'm looking for a way to get the lever off without causing any further damage, so I can replace this white plastic assembly that connects the lock button to the door lock.  Any help/suggestions as to how to remove it with anything other than a hammer and chisel will be greatly appreciated.

Difficult to say exactly but I'd hazard a guess it has something to do with the 3 white tabs located around the centre.

Perhaps a small screwdriver will ease them out or jam a socket of the corresponding size to jam all three open simultaneously.

I'm sure there are many fit-once plastic fittings so you have to expect breakages, things aren't meant to be repaired just replaced nowadays, click into place, destroy on removal.

Thanks for that, MicMac.  I wondered myself whether the black wheel might be removeable if the the three white clips were eased over it but I'm unsure how that might release the component.  I think I will give it a try anyway, see what happens.

Thanks again for the response.

Sorted!!!! :whew:

Managed to get the damn thing off at last!

Was nothing to do with the tabs, they just hold the assembly together as a complete unit.

The "straddle pin" was the key after all.  It's just a spreader like in a plastic rivet or scrivet clip.

So, using a small screwdriver or the like, you simply push it through the assembly until it falls out the back of the elbow lever assembly (and promptly gets lost down inside the door frame! lmao).

Once this central pin is out the assembly easily comes away from its mounting hole on the door.  I expect it should be easy enough to refit (if I can now just find an undamaged replacement for it).

These pics should illustrate its construction nicely:  Front View  Back View

Many thanks to hose who took the time and trouble to contribute.

Cheers,

B.
