Gearbox major oil leak

Featured Replies

I spotted an oil leak under the car one day. So, decided to drive it to the local garage and been told that it looks like a major problem. Possible full overhaul of the gearbox.

The car made 65k and warranty is till 60k, the problem is that I wouldn't know if the problem is really serious because to be able to identify it you have to look into the gearbox.

Skoda said that they pretty much never dealt with gearbox issue nor even that it can leak!

I do trust my local mechanic to not even move the car and contact Skoda because it is not really normal to have a gearbox in such state after 65k millage. I spoke with CAB and there is right under The Supply of Goods implied Act 1973 where the goods I purchased should be satisfactory quality, not only free of fault but also should last reasonable length of time.

So, what kind of issue you can you diagnose by just looking at it to say this looks pretty bad? When The Skoda guy say how can the gearbox even leak?

Any experience with such issue?

Simply put, if the gearbox suddenly lost all of the oil in about three days it is pretty serious? The link above doesn't really say anything about gearbox leak. There was no loss of engine oil.

No oil in the box would be a very serious issue, causing catastrophic wear in the everything that moves in it (gear teeth, bearings, selector forks, synchro mechanism etc.). In that state I'd recommend that it's carried to the garage to fix.

The leak is from bell housing area and it is gearbox oil. I guess there are son many variables to decide on burden of proof, aka who is liable.

Check the clutch slave cylinder hose connector. If this leaks then fluid will run down the face of the gearbox and drip off the bottom of the bell-housing, mimicking a gearbox leak,

Cheers, Terry

I had to send the car to Skoda for inspection and the issue is that clutch pressure plate is cracked causing metal piece to rub against gearbox casing and crack slave cylinder. Lovely!

How 'normal' this is for clutch 65k old, normal driving, with full service history?

What was the outcome of this? I think mine has the same problem after 30k miles!!

patczky has not logged in since 10 December so you may not get a reply.

Sorry guys for being silent for such long period.

Solution: Skoda then agreed that this is manufactures fault therefore they will pay for the full repair where I only pick up the price for clutch (£150ish) and replaced the clutch flywheel and gearbox :) Because it was a year out of warranty.

I had to open a case with Skoda UK, they were really great, quick and professional and we got to a conclusion where everybody was happy.

I will have some pictures but the dealers didn't send me the paperwork yet.

That is a very good result, and thank you for the feedback.
