VRS steering wheel not straight, tracking?

Featured Replies

Hi all. My '14 VRS TDI went in for a faulty wheel bearing replacement (at 6k!!). The day after I noticed the steering wheel was slightly out, by 10 degrees or so. It drives fine and doesn't pull but it is distracting. I did phone the local stealer, but they said that nothing they did would affect the tracking and of course offered to have a look at my cost.

I am tempted to book into somewhere local to have the tracking checked, but any other ideas?

Thanks

I would tell them to sort it out. It wasn't like it when you took it in so they have to sort it.

I would insist that they rectify it at no cost.

Who actually said that, a Service Reception Desk Assistant or Service manager.?

Ask them to go get the Master Tech or Workshop Manager to put that in writing, or the Dealer Principal.

Then you can forward that reply to Skoda UK Customer Services, name and shame them here and elsewhere.

As I.T decided to re-start the server, I took a trip to the local Nationals, 10 minutes, £30 job done. I could've spent half a day going back to Skoda, arguing with the service desk and getting no-where. Could knock Nationals in Street, Somerset for service. The guy even took a shine to the car.

You do have to laugh sometimes, it also went in to have the fan switch looked at the same time, depending on the day, the LED's go out on the speed at different sometimes 3,4 or 5. I believe they had some head scratching, tested other VRS's and decided it must be a VRS defect. I do get the feeling sometimes the Mk3 VRS is a bit of a special car........

As a note, the LEDs go out when it matches the "auto" speed. It does it on all mk3 with climate.

What did they do to sort it for in 10 minutes & £30.?

I hope they never took off the steering wheel & moved it.

Take you Bill & the Alignment check results & present it to the Skoda Dealership Principal if their was Alignment adjustment required.

Or Send it in to Skoda UK Customer Services for the attention of Tom Chadwich Customer Services Manager.

More than likely just the tow adjustment, the hub has to come off to replace a bearing, and it will upset the alignment.

Most places charge for each adjustment, toe, camber, etc so it sounds as if it was just the toe.

The receipt and/or the machine read out will confirm. However, if it was using a hunter machine and they didn't do a caster swing (steering lock to lock while the machine calibrates) then the adjustment won't be perfect. I've often had to educate the technician on this, they're always amazed at the different readings.

& the Skoda Workshop that did the Warranty work changing a bearing are to put the car out correctly repaired.

So if it is toe that required adjusting, that was for them to do.

Now it is for them to pay for, because they were paid under the Warranty to do the job properly in the first place.

So you invoice them, the Service Desk Receptionist need to work for the Customer as well as their Employer.

So you hit the Employer with some other persons labour charge for doing a job correctly.

ie

The Alignment Centres £30 bill.

I've just checked the invoice, but there is no mention of results or machine read out. They did say it was only a small adjustment.

I may take this up with Skoda as it was my first instinct that changing a wheel bearing would upset the front wheel alignment. The service guy did go and check with the technician and called me back, but the technician had insisted that the work carried out would not affect the alignment.

But he / she lied.

So you ask the Boss about it, not someone on a desk asking his or her mate if they are next to useless.

Maybe the Technician Kerbed it taking it out for a Road Test after changing the Bearing.

But only if they did roadtest it,

A technician kerbed mine taking it to the parking area, and denied it.

Sadly for them, the video evidence said otherwise.

Its got the Extremes on it, you'd know if you kerbed them. Email has now been sent to the Branch Manager.........

It is supposed to do that.

Out of interest, why are you manually adjusting the fan speed on a car with automatic climate control?

If you feel the fan speed is too low or too high at your set temperature press the climate set up button and adjust the air con profile, which will control the 'aggressiveness' of the fan. You can also turn on automatic air recirculation.

The whole idea of dual zone climate control is that you set your temperature and leave it to it ...........

I love the automatic too, but there are times when I just have to turn fan up 2 clicks or so (on long runs the fan goes down after 21-22C inside is reached). Fog on the inside glass... If it is raining (really moist outside), the outside temp is around 9-10C, people in the car (2 children) my windows tend to fog up. And the reason is simple - car does not want to hook up conditioning to dry inside air.

Set the Air Con profile to Strong and see if it makes a difference.

Do you have Automatic air recirculation enabled? Might be worth disabling that if you keep misting up?

Or just press the demist button until the screen clears?
