Hi all,

Anyone installed upgraded pistons or have looked in to it?

Cheers

vRSy did. Think his were Wossner ones

Got a price from Wossner at around £675, possibly plus VAT. Something to think about for next year as hopefully that would resolve some of the problems with the engine when tuning.  I asked the guy at Skoda about the engine issues yesterday and got the expected results "there is no problems". Asked him about possible issues with the pistons and was told on happens when people have remapped them and never happens with a standard engine. Why the f*uk Skoda put stickers on the side proving it's rally pedigree when the engine can't handle the standard output in some cases. Oh well need to give it some thought if it's worth spending the money on new pistons.

Question is, what else is it worth doing to save in labour. As I imagine that will not be cheap to fit new pistons!!

The twin-charger in general doesn't seem like a great platform for tuning projects as it's producing a lot of power per cc already. Probably cheaper (and ultimately faster) to just get a Golf R or something like that on lease (IMHO).

Ask the tech next time about VW changing the pistons and rings and the ECU and MAP and locked ECU because of hundreds of failed totally standard CAVE. Even one's the manufacturers ran themself. So the CTHE has different internals and so has upgraded CAVE.

I bet you're dealer gets destroyed with knowledge on the Twincharger issues when you visit doesnt he haha.

They have a restraining order.

They have a restraining order.

Id like to think you're joking.

But in reality...

Haha.

If VW were more open in the design and manufacturing faults from 2009 then there would have been less failures, and Master Techs, techs and fitters would be more clued up, check the basics, understand the engines, and the issue could have been resolved easily. Oil levels, ECU updated, and spark plugs changed. VW changing service schedules and technical advice would have been simples.

May I ask what sorts of power are you running or planning to run? Because I have not heard of people generally upgrading/worrying about pistons on Polos/Fabias/Cupras with even much more power than your typical stage 1-2. Sure enough there are several other items that are on the list when you go 250+ but I don't think pistons are very high on that one.

If replacing the pistons saves me in a few years having to replace the block and pistons then might be worth it plus it's piece of mind. I think with a good inductions kit, exhaust and maybe stage 2 map you'd be around the 230 mark. It already has a good turbo and supercharger so can't see much else can be done.

You will not be only replacing pistons you are talking about a rebuild, how many miles are on the engine already. If you have a good one then you are on a winner. Let sleeping dogs lay.

31K, just thinking will it be good for next couple of years.

You are putting in new pistons, rods, bearings, gaskets, etc etc. Why would you not keep that engine in and get one to rebuild ready, and who have you chosen to build the engine?

I'm toying with the thought. Wossner stockist said they could fit them. BTW do you know the spark plug gap?

Sorry but I just fail to see how pistons and block would become an issue at those levels you're mentioning (~230 bhp). Usually this doesn't become a priority until almost past 300 bhp (always speaking about our engines only). This is at least my conclusion after discussions with people that run more serious power than mine and my tuner as well. Also, if you had to pay the price of almost an engine rebuild just to get to 230 I would definitely say it is not worth it. Mine is currently there and although it feels great there is no way I would pay new pistons just to get to and stay there. Speak with a proven tuner (for this engine) and you see what he recommends for those levels you mentioned, I doubt pistons would be very high on that list. For what you can do next though, a hybrid turbo would be close to no.1 i think...

PS. Spark plug gap for stage 1 is recommended to be set at 0.65 (BKR7EIX plugs are recommended as well), I just set mine last month.

The pistons are there to sort go the potential design issues that others have been facing. Thanks for letting me know the spark plug gap, once the ignition coil tool comes going to put in the BKR7EIX that I purchased.

Newbie69 have you noticed any difference in terms of any misfires or rough idling with the NGK ones?

There should be no Rough Idle or Misfires,

What Remap are you running now,  ?

because if you have a CAVE & a REVO Stage 1, then you might well have rough idling and misfires.

The 1.4TSI 132-136 Kw Stage 1 Remap to 210 BHP possible from REVO was rubbish and why so many had it removed.

Not sure I understand which design issues should the upgraded pistons sort because I don't know of any piston-related issues and I do follow several 230+ bhp 1.4 tsi owners that run fine with their stock pistons but anyway.

I haven't noticed anything particular w.r.t. the NGKs but then again I never had issues with misfires etc. even as stock. I switched to the NGKs prior to remapping so they never came in to sort issues so to speak.

No problems with was just asking.

What remap do you have on the car though,  or who's remap i mean?

I think it is a Celtic remap done by South West in Car Tech.

More than happy with the results and cost less than £300 with rolling road before and after. The guy told me to bring new set of plugs which he fitted, in the end I took the car back 3 time mainly due to his rolling road. During that time he update I think the ECU version and messed about with the map since it wasn't reporting the correct temperature.
