storing my summer tyres and alloys

Featured Replies

hey all just removed my 205 45 16 with alloys and fitted 195 55 15 winters on steelies, looks glum now but oh well will be worth it when im battling through the snow in east europe in a few weeks time!

anyway to the point ive got my 4 tyres on the alloys stored in the garage currently, but have been reading up that they need to be cleaned, dried and sealed as air tight as possible in black bags to stop the rubber losing oils in the rubber. now ive looked up tyre storage bags on ebay and can source a decent set for £10-20 but they dont actually create an air tight seal over the rubber just cover it and leave the centre of the alloy exposed.

are these worth it or am i better of getting some heavy duty rubble sacks and vacuuming the air out and using cable ties to lock them tight over the winter months.

help and advice greatly received all!

ta!

lol... I just stack mine up (side on of course) in the back of my kitchen! has been good for "ever" however shmbo's winters (just gone on) are starting to age crack.... BUT they have to be over 5 years old now, so we may keep them on during the summer, wear them, sell her "summer tyres" and go for some "all season" for the next winter... her driving circumstances may suit all season tyres...

as I run track tyres in the summer, I will keep swopping to winters (just done it) but I do enough miles so that they have to be repaced every year anyway.... (swmbo only does about 8k a year!)

I'm more worried about my 2nd car, my roadster that sits most of the winter out.... because pressure on one part of the tyre will make them go oaval, AND its outside... may have to try to drive it every 3 months or so!

to answer you, If you store them inside, and they are off the car , they will be fine! as long as they are not going to last more than 4 years or so, in which case do all the cleaning drying ect that you read about! otherwise they will not deteriate before they need replacing :)

Have our three sets stored on wheel trees in the garage just covered with the supplied 'cloth' cover. The oldest set of winters we have are 4 year old Bridgestone Blizzak LM30's, which seem to be in very good condition and still have almost 6mm of tread left despite regular use 5 months of the year. May yet get another winter season out of them, although 4 years is the recommended tyre life for winters, against 6 for summers.

I do the same but with wheel bags on each as well.  I also drop the pressures to 1bar

I'm now in the habit of washing them before storing on a wheel tree. The first year I had them they were on the floor in that garage and the steelies for the roomy corroded far worse than they had done while on the car. They are much better going away clean, and its not such a horrid job refitting at the next change. Was lucky this year as I only had to clean the Superbs wheels, as the Fabia had winters put on as soon as we got it.

All I do is wash them, clean the alloys and spray them with a protective wax, and make sure I've picked all the stones out of the sipes. They sit on a tyre tree which comes with its own cover. Tyre tree was about £20 from Ebay.

If you've got a pit, stick them in there.

But not if it's got 6" water and frogs in it!

I have wheels and tyres everywhere, shed, garage, garden, I'm not fussy :D
