Rear Brakes

Featured Replies

Hello

Back on Briskoda after a few months off. Now in the Superb 2 forums having bought a 2011 elegance combi tdi CR 170 4x4. Loving the car, well impressed with it. A world away from my old '51 reg 4x4 octy!

I have a question / query about the rear brakes though- the rear wheels seem to get black and dirty with brake dust more than the fronts. Any other car I've had the fronts get more dust than the rears.

Is this a normal superb thing, or does it suggest sticking calipers at the rear? I've only driven 250 miles since I bought the car.

Maybe I'm just being ocd about my new car !

Thoughts appreciated

Thanks

My front alu gets more dirty than the rear

And that would also make sense. Because the car breaks more In the front.

Maybe it is because it is 4x4 ??

My car is Superb from 2010

Hello,

After 135,000 miles in my combi 2, 140 bhp, [ taxi] ,2012 reg,

Pads have gone at 50k front @ 40k rear clearly

indicating the rears are doing the donkey work @

why your alloys are black,as are mine.Have never

known F/Pads to outlive R/Pads on any other vehicle

       i have driven.    cheers.

My CR 170 2WD estate has the same issue, rear wheels showing a lot more brake dust than the fronts so nowt to do with 4WD.

Different pad material - front to back ?

Braking modes to aid stability ?

Chris

Does suggest that the brakes aren't balanced.  Pads (and pistons) are bigger at the front than the back, so you have more contact with the discs - and so should expect more wear / brake dust at the front.

During the summer, I get more muck on the front wheels for sure, and my car is the same spec as yours. However this time of year I find the wheels get black from salt / other muck on the road, and its dark grey / black. Maybe its this? The rears do seem bad, now.

I agree, my rears actually look a lot worse than my fronts at this time of the year with all the residue from salt in the cold weather and it does look very much like brake dust.

Thanks for the replies, it doesn't sound like a problem that needs attention.

Cheers
