Columbus problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have had the retro fitted Columbus out of my Yeti with the intention of doing an aerial repair.

After stripping down some of the radio I decided that the repair was beyond my capabilities so put it back together.

Unfortunately, upon refitting, I now have a working radio and DVD but it is asking for Map disc and constantly says system starting when trying to access music on the hard drive.

Anybody had similar problem ?

.

Thanks in advance

  • Remove the cd as instructed. Change the clock on the car from 12hr to 24hr (or the other way round), then try again.

  • Good luck. Keep us updated (because I might need your advice if mine goes the same way).

  • Not quite sure but as it worked before I dismantled it I can only assume it was damaged then, or just lucky it was still working before !! Easy enough to dismantle and if I can source a motherboard

Sounds like it is struggling to access the hard drive.  Perhaps an internal connection has been disturbed - have you opened it up in any way to fix the aerial connection?  If so I would suggest re-opening and reseating the hard drive.

Think you may be right Adam.

I had opened it up and moved ( not removing the ribbons ) one circuit board. This had two motherboard like connections which I pushed firmly back. Maybe a bad connection somewhere. I did have to remove and refit the board once as it wouldn't initially start up at all!

The reason I mention the hard drive is the music it is trying to access is presumably there and also when the nav part asks for the disc it is usually because there is no map installed on the hard disk.

Hopefully it is a simple as reseating the connector and not damage to the board itself.  When accessing sensitive electronics it is probably best to wear an anti static wristband connected to an earthing point, to avoid static charge damaging things (although plenty say that is overkill).

Thanks again.

Will have to slip it part again and reseat connections. Did look at the pins last time and all seemed fine, none broken/bent etc.

Did try my best to handle as little as possible when dismantling etc so hopefully no damage done there.

Seems logical as you say as it needs the hard drive for both maps and music.

Ok good luck, let us know.

Will do.

I'll be " going in " again tomorrow night.

Good luck. Keep us updated (because I might need your advice if mine goes the same way).

Unfortunately, the motherboard is knackered.

Contacted EddieNL to see if he knows of a source.

Second hand one on Ebay for £70.

Also got a spare aerial and GPS combination, was going to replace broken one on the motherboard but no need now. :(

That's not good news. Sorry to hear that.

Was it a pre-existing fault or something that got broken during the dismantle?

Easy enough to dismantle and if I can source a motherboard hopefully all will be ok.

Sorry to hear this but 70 quid is quite cheap to be fair. Suggest you grab an anti static wrist band while you are at it for £2 more. I buggered up an old PC board doing something similar which I could only put down to electro static discharge..

Do you mean the GPS radio board or the main board?

Looking at pictures on the net it's called the motherboard. Suppose you could call it the main board. It has the Fakra aerial connections on it, which was why I was removing it for repair.

That's the GPS / radio board then. Main boards are over £200, and radio boards can be had for about £70.

I'll have one in the workshop if you get stuck.

If it is the radio board we are talking about, can you supply. Assume it is secondhand.

Here a link to ebay product http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-RNS510-MFD3-Radio-board-motherboard-mainboard-Columbus-sat-nav-A2C53257778-/161487782845?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item25996c03bd.

Looked on Carsytems website and in fairness there picture of a motherboard is different to what I require which is the same as ebay listing. Are the the same for LED versions?

Yeah, I'll have a mooch about tomorrow and check one out for you. I'll be in touch when I've had a play. I've about half a dozen.

Thanks for that.

Really want to get it up and running again.

Did you have a chance to look today for a board Rustynuts?

No, unfortunately the wife had other ideas (shopping etc.) and I was required elsewhere. I did manage to rebuild a unit I had apart (nearly) but didn't have time to test it and remove the board for you. I don't work as fast as I used to since my accident a couple of weeks ago and this is the first time I've used any tools in earnest, so bear with me while I relearn how to hold a screwdriver.

Okay, had a couple of hours to play around and I've got a board ready for you. All tested okay and ready to go.

Send me a pm with your address and I'll get it sent off to you. :nerd:

Tell you what though, I've just had a good read of the initial problem. I had a machine delivered to me with a similar problem asking for the maps disc. When I inserted the maps disc it went right through the install correctly, and when I removed the disc it straight away asked for the maps disc again. Reloading the firmware sorted the problem with no hardware replacement needed, and the mapping started working without any installation needed. Before we go any further, have you tried this at all? Might be worth doing so first and seeing what it behaves like.

Sorry to hear of your accident. Hope all ok.

P'm you.

Cheers

Would that explain the Columbus hanging on selection of media though?
