Paris mayor wants to ban diesels by 2020

I'm going to go back to petrol for my next car. DPFs are a false solution for the problem of diesel fuel exhaust.

Nitrogen oxides from diesel fumes implicated in falling bee populations as well: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/24364637

I know any car is polluting even if it's zero emissions at the tailpipe, but I think there are too many inherent problems with diesels - and I can't afford the Tesla Model S I'd really want as my next car!

I tend to agree with you. We were all sold on the idea of diesels by consecutive governments and so called motoring experts.

Sure, diesels are very economic, but we have to think of the damage which they do to the environment. All the techy mods - egr, dpf - do not make any difference, when you see the almost new car in front of you release a black cloud of fumes which would rival that from a cross channel ferry.

I read a couple of years ago, that child leukaemia rates in Greenwich were up, almost certainly due to the large amount of particulates being released into the air, particularly those at the same level which could be ingested by a child.

Hardly surprising given the amount of congestion they have in Paris. IIRC they've banned odd then even car registrations in to ease congestion so it must be grim at times there.

hmmmmmm. Possible scrappage scheme for the uk to get rid of diesels ( I'm guessing it will be older non dpf models). I'll need to get her to hold on to the 1.9 pd seat for a while longer then....

"Adding electric vans and putting limits on tourist buses would also help lessen the public health risk, she said."

Funny how individuals are invariably targetted by politicos, when in fact main unwanted NOx emissions are from businesses and town buses. An outright ban is called for passenger cars, but when it comes to public transport, a mere suggestion is offered, and even that covering only the businesses which the Paris authorities do not pay for. Says it all about politicians really, we are cattle to these people. And how many wood and coal fires are there in Paris? Very fashionable nowadays, and massively polutting.

Also, bear in mind that direct injection petrol engines which form most of petrol engine market, can actually be 10x worse than a DPF equipped diesel when it comes to PM emissions.

Enforce existing regulations better, including roadside testing, add perhaps scrappage incentive for 10+ year old diesels (EU3 and earlier) for passenger cars, and for EU4 and earlier commercial trucks/buses, and the problem will disappear within a few years.

I suggest the Mayor takes a read here, modern petrols cause more pollution than even non-DPF equipped diesels...

It is also food for thought when you consider that the worlds 15 biggest ships create more pollution than all of the cars in the world...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the motorist is an easy target.

And always will be!

Plus, if they do this, how are businesses in the city going to get deliveries from vans, cars ect
