CR170 battery type - is it an 096 ?

Featured Replies

Has anyone fitted a 096 (77Ah) battery in place of the standard 027 (63Ah) that's normally fitted to a 1.8 PETROL Yeti? (The 096 is the standard diesel fitment)

They are the same width & height, but the 096 is 278mm long, whereas the 027 is 242mm long and it looks as though it might not then be possible to clip the original plastic box around the longer battery.

The battery tray should be the same, only a couple of tabs to be cut to allow the longer battery.  There are even tabs for the 278mm battery. To fit the 315mm battery I had to cut these tabs and one of the curved edges of the tray.

Have a look between the air filter and the battery, you should see a portion of the battery tray here.  Also you may see a gap behind the battery. I think the standard batteries are centered at the tray, so the 278mm battery may not extend more than half the length difference (19mm).

Many thanks to Muddyboots for this ECP link.  The original  battery on my  March 2010 170 has not enjoyed short runs and cold weather of late, resulting in the RAC coming to my aid yesterday morning - first time  I have used them in 7 years!

Anyway,  today I opted for the ECP route, via Amazon, and completed my order with a delivery notification of 19-23 December.  No sooner than I had placed the order, I was electronically advised that the order may not be fulfilled until after Christmas.  No good to me.  Cancelled order immediately and contacted ECP Direct.  They confirmed that their nearest Depot - 2.7 miles from me - had one in stock.  Placed order, and after waiting a couple of minutes while they 'matched' the Amazon price, off I went to pay & collect from the local ECP with order number in hand.

Changing over the batteries was a walk in the park, taking no more than 10 minutes.  The new battery was longer, but fitted neatly into the tray and securing plate/lip.  The original cosy cover doesn't quite fit anymore, but, other than that, no problems whatsoever.

The new battery turned over the engine with ease, but a multimeter check showed that it would benefit from a charge.  Job done!

That's unlucky.

I ordered two from ECP via Amazon, and they both arrived next day via UPS - even though I'd only paid the standard, non-express delivery charge.

Finally got round to fitting the Bosch S5 096 battery today.

It's about an inch longer than the original battery, but the tray is plenty long enough to accommodate, as others have said.

The little battery coat doesn't quite fit round though, had to leave a little gap at the rear, but done in such away the flap at the top still folds over nicely.

I found it easiest to take the air filter cover off and lift it out of the way, to give access to the bolt retaining the battery (which is a 13mm).

Engine started immediately; had an ESP warning light on, but that cleared as I manoeuvred it out of the garage and turned round on the drive.

OE vs. new...

You can see the length difference (and the difference in ratings):

Ooh, that's interesting.

My Yeti has a rigid plastic "box" that the battery sits in, not just the soft coat.

The battery sits on a plastic tray and has a similar soft coat around (but not over) it and then a 2 piece rigid plastic case clips around it, finished off with a rigid plastic lid that then locks in place.

I think it'll still take an 096, but I'm waiting for a slightly warmer day to experiment.

You clearly have the same 027 original Varta battery as my Yeti. If I read the label properly, it's a surprisingly low capacity 61Ah 540A (EN) battery, whereas even the same physical size new Varta/Bosch Silver battery is 600A (EN). So your new 096 at 77Ah, 780A (EN) has a 44% higher "cold cranking" capacity and should easily handle anything you throw at it.

With any luck the weather might be warmer by Tuesday!

Keep us informed John, as I am going to have to replace mine very soon.

So does your rigid case fit over the soft coat ?

So does your rigid case fit over the soft coat ?

The soft coat is vertical & merely surrounds the battery inside the box, doesn't go over the top under the lid.

I'll see if I can post a photo later when I return from acting as SWMBO's taxi!

Battery box (lid removed)

Battery box (lid in place)

Not sure what the soft jacket does - all I can think is it's there as sound absorption.

I'll have a go this afternoon at seeing if there's sufficient room inside the box to install a 096 battery, but at 3.6cm longer, I don't think it'll fit and still allow the lid to latch in place with the cables attached.

Also interested in the answer to this, good luck :)

096 will fit no problem. Fitted one to mums passat and brothers golf gti last week and they use the same box.

Now £49 inc vat 4 year guaranty.

That looks interesting, but I wonder who backs up the guarantee? At least with a Varta or Bosch, you can return it to any of their stockists in the event of a claim, whether or not that was the original supplying retailer.

A battery with handles would certainly make this job a whole lot easier! Lifting & manoeuvering about 20Kg of handle-less battery at half arms length when you are not exactly endowed with substantial muscles is decidedly awkward. Graham will be ok though as he's used to pulling his levers!

Now then....  I've removed the original battery this pm to have a look at how it fits and check the clamping arrangements,

Removal sequence:

First unscrew the air cleaner top housing and move it to one side. If you don't it's very difficult to reach the battery hold down bolt/bracket.

Then remove the battery top cover (if there is one) followed by the negative lead (10mm socket) & tuck it to one side. Then remove the positive lead & again tuck it to one side.

Lift off the polyester padded jacket vertically from around the battery.

(If you have one) remove the front half of the battery box by pressing in two tabs at the base of the front face & lift it out vertically.

Remove the battery hold down bolt & bracket (13mm)

Carefully lift out the battery. You need to disengage the battery foot from under the tray's fixed brackets by sliding the battery slightly towards the engine.

I’m now pretty sure that as others have said, an 096 will fit ok (tho I haven't got one to try!) but the polyester jacket from the 027 battery definitely won't go back right around the larger battery. I'm still not sure what it's for, but it's probably either sound our heat insulation.

Refitting is the reverse of the above, but :

make sure the foot on the fuse box side of the battery slides fully under the plastic tray’s fixed brackets & the tabs engage with the notches in the foot.

check that the hold down bracket bolt hole then aligns with the middle notch of the battery foot.

So, conclusion: I think it'll fit ok but the soft jacket may need modifying. I reckon I'll order a Varta 096 - as have one or two others here. Prices vary, currently Battery Megastore via Amazon looks like being the cheapest.

If you don't have the rigid plastic type of battery box with a lid, then I strongly suggest not omitting the soft jacket over the top of the battery, or some other type of protection for the live terminal, as without it there is nothing to stop the battery shorting on the underside of the bonnet in the event of a collision.

I replaced my original battery with the Bosch S5 (096), Amazon £88, and it is slightly longer so had to fit it without the cover - no great loss. It performs brilliantly compared with the Varta battery it replaced.

Same here - it certainly flings the engine into life with some enthusiasm compared to my old one.

I'm just in the process of sourcing a couple of batteries for my cars... Though I'd mention (as you mentioned Varta and a mention was made earlier in the thread) that the Varta Silver Dynamic battery range are actually Bosch S5's in every single detail bar the sticker on the side! The Varta version usually come in at a round £10-£15 cheaper than the S5 range so useful to be aware of. :)

Exactly as above, I too bought a Bosch S5 for £80 then quickly realised that the Varta E44 is identical apart from the branding but £10 cheaper!

77Ah and a Cold Cranking Amp rating of 780CCA is about as good as you can get at this price.

I can also confirm that an 096 battery will fit inside the hard plastic container pictured above, it is identical to the one in my 2008 Octavia Scout.

My newer Superb has the soft material cover instead of the hard plastic container. I assumed it was a cost saving exercise so was surprised to see a Yeti with both the soft / material cover AND the hard plastic container together.

And the battery in situ:

Get some grease on those terminals!

:D

Still waiting for my Silver Varta 096 from Battery Megastore via Amazon for £67.99 - the best price I could find anywhere when I ordered it on 29th December for "48 hr delivery".

Unfortunately, although it was on his van, the UK Mail van driver decided not to bother delivering on Friday, but instead put a card through the door to say we were out when he called - which we weren't.

He'll try again on Monday.  I just hope it's not been rough handled in the meantime.

So the next installment of this particular voyage of Yeti discovery will resume on Monday - hopefully.

£60.52 + £7.98 delivery = £68.50 would suggest that speedsport got it cheaper at £67.99..?

Get some grease on those terminals!

:D

Well Skoda never put any on the original!

After a little research it seems those for and against putting grease on the battery terminals / posts are as divided as the regular petrol vs. diesel threads!

Grease was recommended for unsealed batteries to protect against the corrosive gases given off from them whilst they were charging. These gases are released and contain an element of sulphuric acid which can corrode the connectors on the battery.

Modern sealed batteries do not suffer from this but then there are those that believe the grease still offers protection against corrosion ensuring the clamps can be removed in the future.

Then there is the debate about the conductivness of grease and how petroleum jelly should be used instead etc.

I got bored at this point. The posts on my 2008 Octavia and 2011 Superb were greased from the factory for what it's worth!
