DRIVING BY CANDLELIGHT

Featured Replies

Hi All, this is my first post on this forum.

  • Yesterday took  delivery of a new Superb SE  2.0CRD DSG having part exchanged my 17000 mile Yeti Adventure.
  • So far have done 300 miles and am well chuffed with my purchase save for one point namely the absence of decent lights. They appear to project an 'orange' glow and remind me of the 6v lights of old.
  • Whilst I miss the Amundsen + DAB radio and Sat Nav fitted to the Yeti the Superb's DSG is more than a compensatory factor.
  • The Yeti and Superb are aimed at different segments of the motoring world so it would not be fair to compare the varying virtues of each car although the lighting of the road ahead is a common factor.
  • Any advice on what bulbs to fit and what costs are involved would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that it doesn't have xenon lights then?

If not then you have 2 options:

1. Try some uprated bulbs (like osram etc)

2. Fit a HID kit

powerbulbs.co.uk is a good place, I vote for Philips Extremevisions. Best halogens out there in my book.

Next time order the Elegance with factory fit bi-xenon headlights :D

Fit a HID kit. Depending on which side of the fence you sit regarding the legality of course.

I have them in the standard halogen projectors on my Superb SE (thanks to Phil mentioned above) and 40,000 miles later they are still as good as ever.

Flies through MOT's and never been flashed.

You really can't go wrong for £26!

Over 6,000 kits sold to date, most of those I imagine to members on here!

Beware these are for non canbus cars, but there's a link to an alternative for those with Canbus.

Dont buy the canbus kit. They fry the electrical systems. Go for the non canbus and get it coded

I had the same problem on my pre facelift superb, fitted + 90% uprated bulbs and they are fine now and match the decent performance of the standard high beam units.

Thanks for your replies - they give me something to work on. It bugs me that uprated lights are available (as Laurie61 has suggested) but Skoda don't fit them.

@silver1011 - have you fitted those HID's into your superb or just the Octavia ? I had an HID kid fitted to my Superb and it had fried 2 BCM modules. Maybe it was due to fact that the HID kit was 55W not 35W or maybe because it hasnt been coded properly...I dont know. I have turned back to halogen bulbs - but once I have tasted the HID it is really no comparison when it comes to the whiteness and brightness of the HID kit installed before. I'm just looking to get a confirmation that the HID's from londoncolour wont fry my BCM module for the 3rd time - maybe proper coding as well. Some guidelines from a person that has them fitted and they work properly without generating any errors...so please please please help.

You're clocking up the miles... I've only done about 10k miles since I last saw you and the car has only just tripped over 40k miles! lol

I'm guessing you bought a can-bus kit then?

As per the advise here DO NOT buy a can-bus "friendly" kit.

They fry the electrics as you have unfortunately found out.

And yes I helped him fit them to his Superb. The same kit I have on my Octavia and also just helped another member fit to theirs.

Phil

I had this problem in my old B6 passat, with its projector headlights.  Switching the bulbs to Osram Nightbreaker plus sorted it out for me.

I'm in the same situation. Upgraded from Superb I with Xenons to Superb II without them and it felt like driving with candles.
Ordered Nightbreakers to see if they make it better.

Check light alignment first - I had no problems with standard halogens in my previous Octavia and I do a lot of night driving, but when I got my Superb (With Xenons) the lights were angled so low it wasn't safe to go over 30 mph on dipped beams. This is a known issue with some Skodas - what amazed me was that the previous owner had presumably used it for 3 years like this. Got them adjusted under warranty at the dealers and they're excellent now.

I've heard bad things about the 55W kits, not based on personal experience though.

I fitted the 35W kit from London Colour as listed above. 4300K, H7.

Phil is right, it is far better to buy the non-CANBUS kit and then code the car.

I too tried uprated bulbs on previous cars and whilst they did offer additional light output their life was pretty poor.

Due my annual mileage (approx 30K) I found I was going through two pairs a year, back then the Osram Nightbreakers etc. weren't particularly cheap either.

This is why a HID kit for me is a no brainer, cheaper than a pair of brighter halogen bulbs and for me far, far more durable with increased output to boot.

Could you kindly Tell me What change have you made through vcds ?  Is it just ticking the bi-xenon installed or any other bits have to be amended too ?

Thanks a million

@phil no it was not a canbus friendly set , but I would imagine that the fact it was 55w the self check wasn't showing any bulb errors

Got mine from hids 4u never had a problem for the last 14 months, except on the very odd occasion one does not start so just turn ignition off and restart and it comes on

  • 4 weeks later...

I am looking to fit a kit and tried a canbus-pro marked kit today.  I disconnected the battery so got warning lights so have changed it all back to standard.  My question is, if I buy the ones from London HID that are non-canbus can I run them until I can link up with a decoder or will they throw wobblies?  It is used as a taxi so I don't want to risk wiper burn outs so I am not refitting the canbus ones as they seem to cause problems.
