DMF - How far can you go?

Featured Replies

Loads of pepes on here with DMF issues. Honest John says taxi's are looking at a change around 40k.

Is there anyone on here that has managed a mileage that is unexpected from a DMF?

My mileage is 57k and waiting for a problem.

128k now with no need to change DMF or clutch

While not a Skoda, my last car (a Citroen C4) had its DPF replacement point at 125,000-150,000 miles.

Black cabs are an anomaly due to the fact that almost all the driving they do is low speed city driving (which limits the opportunity for the DPF to regenerate, which reduces the lifespan of the unit).

A normal domestic diesel car, doing a mixture of short city trips and some motorway travel should be absolutely fine, both in terms of avoiding DPF problems, and maintaining the projected lifespan of the DPF.

^ Dmf and dpf are two completely different parts :)

DMF = Dual Mass Flywheel

DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter

Did 99K miles in my old MK2 Octavia diesel before selling it. Car was still on the original clutch and DMF, and was a regular at sitting in stop/start traffic on the the M25.

Swapping out mine with the clutch at 60 odd thousand.

Not had the car from new though, so it's always a lottery when you're buying used.

My Octavia had its original DMF (and DPF!) in it when I sold it at 120k. It was absolutely fine and wasn't showing any symptoms of failing.

Sorry - my mistake - I misread the acronym (that'll teach me to play with the forum in the middle of the night).

That said, a similar statement applied to a DMF - unless you are constantly driving in stop-start traffic like a taxi or driving it like you stole it, a DMF should last you comfortably into 6-figure mileage. Even then, a DMF can take this kind of pounding so while the liklihood of failure rises, it's not definite.

The DMF on my Rover 75 was still going strong at 125,000 miles when I sold the car, and I'm confident your Skoda uses better quality parts in its clutch assembly.

Original clutch and dmf on a Octy vRS with a Stage 1 map ( 210bhp/420nm ) 127,000 miles and not a single slip or problem.

Mine is still OK at 142k.  Clutch fine too.

I expect I will eventually swap for a SMF at some stage though.

Our Octy has neary 70k on it and no problem at all - the Fabia had nearly 140k on it when we sold it with its original DMF and clutch...
