New Number plate light design, changing bulb

Featured Replies

Went to change a blown number plate bulb on our one year old fabia estate, but instead of seeing the standard holder with two torx screws, theres a new design! Obviously it just clips in for quick assembly, but how to remove it?

Theres a slot to the left of the clear lens, which looks as if a screwdriver or a special tool would go in. I tried a screwdriver, but the tab inside, maybe 6 or 7 mm in, is dead opposite the opening and its not obvious if a screwdriver would go to the left or right or just pushes this tab back, or whether some sort of hooked tool goes in the slot to tug the holder out.

Has anyone changed a bulb in this new style of holder?

Flat head screwdriver on the black bit.

Flat head screwdriver, a thin one if you've got one and ease it in from the left hand side as if your trying to wedge it underneath the holder.

Okey dokey. I found a post by otaylor tthat he used an old bank card between the holder and body work to pop the holder out. Its too late and dark now, I'll try tomorrow.

As it's clearly a VAG part, could it be substituted with an OEM LED version now sported on Audis and VWs?

this is what i have researched as the a1 has led on it and loads of info on the A1 sites, but not seen anyone do it on here

Get abit of cloth around the screw driver if possible. To avoid damaging the paint.

I used a credit card myself. Did the trick. Less harsh on the paint.

Its not a nice design. Youll cringe as you lever it off, but it will come off.

Thats right. Sorry, just seen this haha.

A credit card with abit of kitchen roll round it i think it was. Somethin soft on it anyway. It was a while ago now aha.

I just gently levered it round and it popped off.

Its a bad design tbf. The screws were much better. Atleast you knew where you stood with them.

Sorry to revive an old thread but i was unable to find a definitive answer.

My car has this new design holder, from what I've read it takes a different bulb to the old ones? The old ones take a 239 festoon bulb but I've read that the new ones are smaller, is this true? I'm looking to buy some LED replacements so would need to know the length of the bulb to be sure.

Thanks

39mm bulbs

Thanks :)
